Got the ring of light yesterday. Called xbox and they are sending me a box to ship my console in. This is the second time I've had one die.... PS3 still running strong...

Why don't you just buy the Best Buy warranty for it? That way when your shit craps out, you can just take it back to the store and exchange it on the spot. I've got a friend at work whose 360 has croaked on him twice and he's gotten a replacement the same day both times. The extra $50 you spend on it is worth it, I think, and it doesnt affect your warranty extension when you do get it swapped out. Also, when the price drops, you may end up getting the higher version (premium for core or elite for premium).I hate to sound like a Best Buy homer, but it's probably the best course of action.
7/29/2007 10:08:56 AM
If you use the Best Buy warranty sometimes the main company (Microsoft, in this case) pretty much voids all warranty rights you might have had through them.Especially since Best Buy might decide that instead of sending you a new console, they'll just send you a gift card for the value of a new console...Granted, that's fine for a 360 or a PS3, but I've got a friend going through this with his Wii at the moment, and Best Buy has decided to issue him a gift card rather than go through the hassle of getting him a new Wii

well i'd be pissed off about all my saved games dieing with the sexbox

Does this happen a lot with 360's?I havent made the plunge yet for a 360 or ps3
7/29/2007 11:26:49 AM
supposedly the failure rate is ~30%no problems with mine in the 10 months i've had it
7/29/2007 11:37:49 AM
I've read it's like 33%I've also heard that the original ones are the only ones that don't have problems. The newer ones are made from cheaper materials and the heat causes things to become warped and solder to heat up and lose connection.
7/29/2007 11:40:31 AM
wow, that sucks!
7/29/2007 11:43:47 AM
didn't Sony just drop the PS3? Oh, I am on my 4th 360...but its running strong
7/29/2007 11:57:37 AM
^^^ the first batch had a few problems. soldering issues, some had bad dvd drives, etc. the newer ones are generally better from what ive heard. i had one break, but my second has been fine (then again my first lasted longer than ive had the second so who knows). hardware is hit or miss i guess, but i enjoy the system overall.
7/29/2007 12:03:37 PM
yeah, I dont think there's any question that it's still a good system, even with all the hardware issues
7/29/2007 12:11:21 PM
got my 360 at launch and haven't had any probs with it. guess i am lucky, but still even if it had messed up i would not give up on the 360 and any other system. it has the best games so far and the best all around experience for console gaming at this time.[Edited on July 29, 2007 at 12:13 PM. seems most consoles get a bad rap for something (at least the newer ones). ps2 - also known for breaking (mostly the cd drives). probably just the sheer number of them, not the rate.xbox - known for being excessively heavy and having a bulky controller (even after the controller s came out).cube - no 3rd party games. kiddy games. obviously not true with things like eternal darkness, metroid, etc out but it stuck.just gotta pick what you like or get um all
7/29/2007 12:17:14 PM
im on my third 360 as well
7/29/2007 12:35:05 PM
It kinda sucks cause i just downloaded the Darkness demo and was looking forward to playing that biotch.
7/29/2007 1:03:05 PM
yeah i need to get that

7/29/2007 3:25:33 PM
oh, btwI JUST WANNAN PLAYED VIDYA GAMES
7/29/2007 3:48:54 PM
newer as in the last few cycles, not the last 30 years of gaming.
7/29/2007 3:54:27 PM
just got the email that mine is shipping tommorow
7/29/2007 7:20:27 PM
The first batches of 360s had a lot of issues and the failure rate was/is quite high on those. I have mad mine since the first release and I have not had a single issue with it yet... considering the amount of hours it has been left on... I guess I am lucky to beat the odds.Their current systems have nicer internals. Most notably is the new stuff to handle the heat. Heat is almost always the cause of their failures. If you get one - keep the brick unit for the power supply in a location with open air as it can get pretty hot itself. Do NOT buy those cheap ass "plug into the AC as a pass through" cooling systems... they will help fry your system faster than ever. If you are worried about cooking your 360 - I can only maybe suggest a USB cooling pad or something... but seriously... don't stack the sucker on top of other hot equipment and expect your 360 or the other stuff to just operate fine at those temps forever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problemshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQgLBD3F6BgI was waiting on a significant price drop before getting a 360. Now I've pretty much decided to skip this generation entirely.
7/30/2007 10:41:17 AM
^ too bad for you lolz if you let reports of the xbox issues make you skip a gen. thats ridiculous, but anyway they fix it for free IF you have a problem. i would bet anything that if you are into gaming you will not skip this gen, and you are just being flat out stubborn if even think that you will. its only a matter of time before you flex and spend on a 360 and then you will be one of us.
7/30/2007 12:34:24 PM
Whatever. The only console I considered buying was a 360 and was on the fence even before all this. A 33% failure rate just sealed it. My PC will be more than enough for the next few years.[Edited on July 30, 2007 at 12:57 PM. Reason : --]
7/30/2007 12:56:24 PM
what does the failure rate have to do with the gaming ability and your entertainment? this is just crazy of you, but remember the name seedless when you are in line at best buy with your 360, ok? the 33% rate has been for some time, why did it just seal it? and that youtube video that you posted apparently influenced and that is the stupidest video on 360 overheating i have even seen, rofl.[Edited on July 30, 2007 at 1:03 PM. I just got one after researching the issue for a while. 1) There's the 3 year warranty.2) There's no possible way that even MS would not correct the problems of the first release 360's. I'd bet $50 that my 360 has a different cooling solution than the original poster's 360.3) PCs got pwnt this time around. 3a) There's no way I'm going to drop the cash on my PC to play catch-up to a $399 console. 3b) All the cool games are coming out on the consoles. PCs might get crappy ports of them if we're lucky.
7/30/2007 1:04:54 PM
^ coming from a pc gamer. just saying there is proof that this jtbilley is just ridiculous.

I'd never play a multiplayer FPS on a console, but I've accepted the fact that there's no use in trying to beat 13 year-old kids, anyway. Therefore, the gamepad for campaign and split-screen is fine for me.Bioshock's coming out on console, too. Crysis and Half Life, while cool, don't beat out the truckload of games coming out on the 360. Starcraft 2 doesn't really count, since it'll probably be able to run on the average email PC. Just to let you know-- I've always been a dyed in the wool PC gamer. The last console I owned was the original NES. I'm running a Core2 6400 and an X800pro, so it's not sour grapes, but seriously-- PC's got clobbered this cycle.

i just like a console better because it is more ergonomic for me, it is easier for me to entertain guests with my system, i like seeing 40 inches of game instead of a typical 20 inches or less, and because a wider variety of games are good for a console, unlike a pc where only mmorpgs and fpss are really the only games that a pc gamer can brag about being better on their machine.
7/30/2007 2:09:18 PM
Well they're the undisputed champs when it comes to strategy games, but typically strategy games don't require a "gaming" system, anyways.
7/30/2007 2:15:23 PM
i forgot about rtss.
7/30/2007 2:17:39 PM
7/30/2007 2:21:10 PM
you still don't get it. i am satisfied with what i have and you are satisfied with what you have, why is this such and issue? i said those are the reasons why I like a console better, and i did not say that they are reasons why EVERYONE should like the console better.on a side note, are you sure that your two-year build will run all of these newer games at a maximum? http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/when they come out here is the best and easiest way to find out if your build will run it on max settings.[Edited on July 30, 2007 at 2:27 PM. 7/30/2007 2:23:39 PM
Oh I get it, everything I said was in response to
7/30/2007 2:27:32 PM
neither one will be crappyjust you have to spend beaucoup dollars probably to get the full effect of the pc version and console gamers get the full effect of the console version just by having the system.
7/30/2007 2:29:06 PM
^See, that's just not true. Look, everyone owns a PC, right? You're not going out and buying one just to play games. I contend that the price difference between an average PC and a "gaming PC" is within $100-$200 of the price of a new console. Not to mention that to take advantage of any of these consoles full potential, you need to "upgrade" your TV to an HDTV, whereas almost everyone has a PC monitor thats at least capable of 1024x768 (essentially 720p).
7/30/2007 2:35:36 PM
hdtv is pretty standard nowadays, and besides you can use it for entertainment for yourself and guest... see where i am going with this... most pc gamers appear to be troglodytes, self-centered, and/or pretty much have no life. i don't fall in this category. i'll stick to my console gaming habits, not only for these few reasons, but because i just like it better. kind of like why the terrorists never give in ... because they believe in their own system and they don't care if other thinks it not 'right', likewise i will stick to my console no matter what is said and why.
7/30/2007 2:40:14 PM
Christ dude, you shoulda warned me ahead of time that you were just gonna start spouting nonsense like
7/30/2007 2:53:48 PM
^ thats non-sense?muhahahahahahaha you tickled seedless
7/30/2007 3:02:07 PM
7/30/2007 3:20:36 PM
Dude.........what?
7/30/2007 3:43:37 PM
Sorry, I misread. I thought you were saying that the difference between an average PC and a gaming PC was ~$200.But I think my point stands; for less than the cost of going from email box to gaming PC, you can have a console, which imo is at this time the better platform. And you're talking about GoW as good example of a port? How long will it be between the 360 release and the PC release? At this rate PC's will get GoW at about the same time 360's get GoW2. And not to mention, GoW is the best-selling 360 title. Of course this port would be treated well. Again, from what I've read, 360 ports thus far have been crap.
7/30/2007 3:53:51 PM
in all honestly, i would rather be gaming and sitting on my couch downstairs with some friends and beers instead of in my office at my computer speaking to them over a microphoneyou can't easily multiplayer in person on a pc, end of story(don't bring up LANs, because of all of the work transporting the machines, i don't consider it easy multiplayer)
7/30/2007 4:21:50 PM
Dude, that's all well and good. No one is saying console gaming doesn't have its benefits, or that it can't be as entertaining or rewarding as PC gaming. The only thing I took issue with were false claims and misinformation like "gaming capabe PCs are prohibitively expensive" and "all PC games are crappy console ports". You can enjoy your console, but do it without making up lies about PCs.
