oh no....see, there is a reason why no one else would do it.we had a 96, same problem. just drove it and finally donated it.have you changed all 6 plugs yet , now thats a bitch

not sure how those models differ...but on my 96, i had to chisel 2 square holes from the inside of the car to reach each of the plugs.man it made life easier

Reason #48 why I will never own a mini van.

do they not have a dog house? i know they're rwd...
7/27/2007 1:29:05 PM
oh they have a dog house....but its no help when you are changin the rear plugs on the motor.
7/27/2007 1:53:17 PM
what the hell is the dog house?the only thing i can think of is a panel in the cabin that you can remove where the engine intrudes into the passenger compartment

yup
7/27/2007 2:11:53 PM
^^correct. pretty much all rwd vans have them. most front engine forward control buses, trucks, etc. too. generally, it makes dropping the transmission super easy since you have easy access to the upper bellhousing bolts, the shift linkage, dipstick tube, etc. only thing i've ever done to an aerostar is a brake change though.

cool, it makes sense given the design of those things
7/27/2007 2:49:53 PM
rag + gas + match = problem solved

Yeah, the doghouse is super small. You really do need a lift and a long extension with a wiggle socket to do the rear plugs. If it IS an '87 Aerostar, you'd do well to get rid of the sumbitch. I can just see replacing the front pump seal on the tranny and the whole tranny shitting the bed within two weeks.
