Time for a new phone, but can't be an iPhone. Any suggestions?Leaning toward either a Nokia 6126 or a Razor. I'd rather have the Nokia, I think, but I have heard the battery isn't great. Also, anyone with any experience upgrading through their phones through the "upgrade option." Don't want to have to renew my contract.

V3xx is the one to beat for reception, from what i've gathered. Nokia is up there, too.

I don't need anything too badass. Just want a basic, mid-tier phone with good reception and call quality.

iPhone 4 gig then.

i bought a Sony Ericsson 520a off of eBay and I love it. small, light, great reception, tons of features and good sound quality with mp3 capabilities.

3rd for the W810i. Incredible phone, very underrated. If you don't have a need for corporate email, this phone will do everything you need and more. I have a 2GB card in it with 20 CDs on it and I still have tons of room. The camera is very useable, it has an FM tuner and you can find tons of free software for it only. I bought a bluetooth GPS receiver for $40-ish and found some software online that lets me use the phone as a GPS unit too.Actually I'd say any of the SE candy bar style W or K series phones are great. Great UI with tons of functionality if you want / need it. If not, the features are just under the surface enough not to get in the way of basic phone functions.

Does anyone have the Sony Ericsson k790a? I'm thinking of buying it and would like to know if its worth it.

Razrs are the biggest pices of shit. I only know one maybe two people that actually like the damn thing. When I switched to cingular last year I got a razr cause I thought they were a bad ass phone. But really they are just a P.O.S. I had to file a warrenty claim on the first one due to problems it had from the factory. The second one was the same way and now that they sent me a third one and it started doing the same shit I said the hell with it and just started looking for phones on ebay. I would say any phone other than the Razr and the high dollar iPhone...what a joke. I bought a Sony Ericsson s710a off of ebay and I love it only have to problems with the phone...the fact that you can only use the 6 factory preset message tones for txt messages and the buttons can be a little difficult to use. You may wont to check out the Samsung D807 its not a bad phone. My roommate has one and she loves it.[Edited on July 19, 2007 at 4:44 PM. Reason : add more info]

to those of you wit the w810i - are the buttons too small? are the menus/phonebook/UI speed instantaneous? can you plug in a standard 3.5mm headphone? where's the cheapest place to get one?

i got the k790a, good reception, good call quality (even on like 1 bar). Battery life is about 2 or 3 days as long as you dont beat on bluetooth or go into terrible areas. Decent camera, flash will kill your battery. okay walkman, i like it, and the screen si better than the 810, i would say worth it for the extra 50 over the 810My buddy with the810 likes the 790 better[Edited on July 20, 2007 at 10:05 AM. i also have the w810i. it has been great so far, had it about 3 months.

You have to use a headphone adapter on the W810i. The one that comes with it is long and annoying. I bought a short one on eBay for $5 and just carry it in my pocket and don't even notice it. The buttons are small but I have no problems with them. They have great tactile response. Occasionally the menus have a little lag but they are pretty fast compared to some phones I've used. I got mine from the Cingular store for $40 with a new contract. You can get them on Amazon with a 2 year contract and make like $50 on them.

what if your only qualification is signal reception?is there anywhere to find real analysis of this, or am I stuck with "oh yeah, I have Phone X and it gets great reception."
7/20/2007 5:24:28 PM
^ that's my number one need right now, i can't even make/recieve calls in my apartment (here in Winston-Salem) due to lack of signal with my Nokia 6102i (supposedly a good phone as far as signal goes). But I'm pretty sure we live in a dead area, even though it's right in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, since 90% of the neighbors and locals have Verizon up here. Fuck Cingular
7/20/2007 5:51:29 PM
i second anything Sony Ericsson, but at the same time Fuck CingularAT&T
7/20/2007 5:58:33 PM
well, they're pretty much the only decent bet for service where i live

i just asked one of the ATT reps in the support chat about the issues i have up here...he said there is definitely less coverage in WS than Raleigh, and it doesn't surprise him that most people here have Verizon. (at least he was honest). and, as far as he could tell, there are no plans to construct any new towers in the area. as far as differences in average signal strength between phones, he said that most of the models they sell now are about the same. so upgrading to a different phone would be useless.i guess it's time to make the switch...may as well get a 2-year contract too, since i'll be up here for at least that long
