of any of the 4 big money market teams. Yankees, Redsox, Mets, or Dodgers. and A-Rod says he will come play for your team for $5 million/year. The catch is, when he retires he wants 15% ownership of the team. would you agree to the deal or disagree?sorry "an" MLB team owner]
7/13/2007 7:45:44 AM
No, thats a silly question. No one of those people would agree to that. Those teams are worth alot more he is. I say give him 30 millon and let him play ball for one of those teams.
7/13/2007 8:31:20 AM
For the same price ($30M) I'd rather have a combination of Zambrano, Dye/Rowand, and Gagne.
7/13/2007 8:53:38 AM
Is it silly? You pay him 30 mil a year for 7,8, maybe 10 more years and that is 210-300 million dollars. In 2005 the Mets had a revenue of 180 mil and an operating income of -11 mil. http://tinyurl.com/7h85c. 2005 is all I could find. ]
7/13/2007 8:56:45 AM
the yankees losing money is a jokeim sure they make A SHIT ton in just merchandise every yearand no I wouldn't give him a 15% stake because then you will be having to pay him for the rest of his life instead of just for 5 - 10 years
7/13/2007 9:02:29 AM
what percentage would you say is reasonable? 5%? 10%? If there is any reasonable number at all. I agree that I would just pay him the salary. There was talk on ESPN though that partial ownership might be what A-Rod's agent demands. Some GM may take him up on the idea. Especially if he would agree to come to one of the AAA teams like the nationals or devil rays.
7/13/2007 9:32:54 AM
how is it a joke? they're spending, what, a quarter billion on players alone? it takes a lot of $25 hats and $100 jerseys to make up $250M
7/13/2007 11:27:14 AM
if he wants ownership he better play for cheaper than $5mil/year...cheaper like freebut overall no i wouldnt do it...what if he broke his legs in the first game of the season and never played again...and now he owns party of your team
7/13/2007 11:36:00 AM
this thread and whole idea is retarded imowhat idiot owner would give away 15% ownershipFOR 1 30+ YEAR OLD PLAYER[Edited on July 13, 2007 at 12:03 PM. Reason : ]

this thread is retarded.Certified. Oeuvre

But Boras is not is retarded and there is a chance this will come up in negotiations.I'll probably give up baseball entirely if he signs for $35 million.

rowand: $9/mil, 4 yearsbook it
7/13/2007 3:07:46 PM
It would really depend on the team. The Yankees are worth like 1.2 billion dolars. So you might could give him 10% if he plays 6-7years at a bargain price of 5Million/year. So in roughly those 6-7 years, he'd make ~150Million, which wouldn't be that far from what he could pull. If it was a team like TB, which may be worth 250-300Million, you'd probalby have to give him at least a 1/3 share. You'd just be exchanging 100Million in salary for 100Million or so in shares of the team. While an owner wouldn't want to relinquish majority control, if that's not an issue, it could happen. Since ARod is keeping the payroll low during his time as a player, the other owners are going to make alot of money, which they in turn lose that money when he retires.I guess it depends how much you think ARod is worth. I think he's only worth 5yr., 125Mil. He's definetly not worth 30Mil & I wouldn't guarentee anything more than 5 or 6 years.[Edited on July 13, 2007 at 3:12 PM. Reason : ]

Mark Cuban might become a Cubs owner
7/13/2007 10:21:31 PM
^not if selig has anything to say about it, but i'd love to see it
7/13/2007 10:30:14 PM
why the shit would selig stop him
7/14/2007 12:24:44 AM
because Cuban isn't exactly a typical team owner, I dont see him wearing suit and ties to meetings if you know what I mean
7/14/2007 12:30:03 AM
The reason Selig won't be fond of Cuban is because Jerry Reinsdorf, who runs the ChiSox, is one of Selig's right hand men.Reinsdorf, of course, also runs the Chicago Bulls. And Jerry doesn't get along with Cuban apparently.
7/14/2007 12:52:14 AM
^^^Bud Selig doesn't care about name recognition. As much as he is criticized, he is good at keeping the game intact and not turning it into Entertainment Tonight. He's old school, and traditionally mlb owners have been out of the spotlight (aside from Steinbrenner). As long as he has a say, thats the way it will stay.
7/14/2007 1:25:22 AM
I bet Selig is not a fan of Theo Epstein. He is the only GM in baseball I can name.
7/14/2007 2:01:26 AM
But then again, doesn't the National League need a mogul?God knows the league needs a shot in the arm.
7/14/2007 3:21:48 AM
^The NL is not near as bad as people make out to be.The NL has won 3 out of the last 6 W.S. and won it last year. The Mets and NL West are strong.
7/14/2007 8:50:24 AM
I do own an MLB team, and I would never do this.
7/14/2007 11:33:21 AM
why does Bud Selig have any say if Cuban owns the Cubs? isn't it put to a vote by all the other owners
7/14/2007 2:51:12 PM
relatively naive thing to say
7/14/2007 3:49:56 PM
enlighten me mighty possessor of knowledge
7/14/2007 3:56:30 PM
7/14/2007 6:00:53 PM
^^mlb ownership is not all about money. You gotta have cash, but at the same time you gotta have consent. Cuban will be confronted with steinbrenner, mccourt, and Wilpon, who are all discrete owners, and have more control over the game than selig can dream of.

7/15/2007 12:51:33 PM
I wouldn't do what the OP asked but as a sidenote, ARod came to the Mets before he signed with Texas and told them he'd sign for $5M/yr less than he got in Texas... He's been a Mets fan his whole life and wears the white shoes in every AS game in honor of the '86 teams.I'm still holding out hope he comes home to queens next year still offering a discount... Delgado, Wright, Reyes, ARod.. best IF ever.
7/15/2007 10:03:07 PM
i would never give anyone ownership of my team
