Next week I'm flying to Boston; it'll be the first time I've ever flown. I'm going with a friend and our seats are across the aisle from one another. Is it possible to switch seats so we're together? I've already called U.S. Airways, but gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes.

if the flight isn't full then it probably won't be a problem for you to sit together, else it's basically up to the people sitting beside you

Depends on the person whom you are taking the seat from.If it is safe to assume they're not going to make you join the mile high club against your will for asking for their seat then see if they mind moving.

Talk to your flight attendant when you get on the plane. A lot of times they will ask the person to move for you. If nothing else, they might be able to move you somewhere else where there are to adjacent open seats.

You might get beat up by an air marshal for trying to shuffle seats if you look like a terrorist.

1) you weren't able to pick your own seats?2) just ask someone nicely

talk to the person you want to switch with. especially if you both have aisle seats, people seem to want those. my gf and i switched with people on 3 different flights to/from vegas. just ask them nicely, they'll likely switch.

go up to the check-in place at the gate with your friend before they start boarding. ask if they have two seats together. if they do, you can just exchange your seats for those. if not, follow above advice.

Some terminals have a self check-in with the option to change seats on the interface. I would try to adjust there first, as it is the first interactive stop you'll make at the airport. Then ask the people at the gate as advised earlier. I recently flew in from California and gave up my seat so a mother could stay with her infant but as karma would have it, the flight attendant put me next to a model for the rest of the flight. Needless to say, it sometimes pays to be nice!

If you don't succeed in getting the seats changed pre-flight, definitely ask people around you before checking with the flight attendant. And remember, they are doing you a favor - you never know if they chose their seats for a reason - although you are in a good bargaining position with two aisle seats. Good luck and have fun in Boston! I <3 <3 <3 Boston.

Get to the airport early, check in on the kiosk to see if you can get two seats together and if not, ask the ticket agent. As long as too many other people aren't checked in yet (i.e. get there early), then the ticket agent can get you two seats together. If that doesn't work, just ask someone to trade seats once you've boarded the plane. My wife and I have done that a number of times on full flights.

Ideally, select new seats when you get boarding passes - if you can, check in online 24 hours in advance. However, even if you can't officially swap, there's a high likelihood one of the people stuck in a middle seat will happily trade for an aisle seat.

How in the fuck have you never flown? I mean really. Jesus Christ some people amaze me.

Even with all the hassle, flying is still pretty much awesome. Have fun.

Unless you live in a really far-flung place that's international. 18 hours to get home to NC :-(
