I'll be taking classes in Tompkins and Winston this fall, can I manage without getting a parking permit? How is the availability of spots in that general area after 5pm?

You probably won't have much of a problem finding a spot, it just might be a little bit of a walk from Tompkins/Winston. I'd expect Riddick Lot to be perfectly fine though.

any of the meter spots or 2 hour parking behind Brueger's Bagels are free open parking after 5pm.

If your classes start at 6, try to get to campus around 5:30ish. You should be able to find people leaving work to get a spot.

I've been doing this for a year and a half.

I'm a grad student there too, so feel free to ask me anything if you have questions.

Thanks for the replies. I graduated from undergrad in '01 and have only been on campus a few times since then. I wasn't sure how much things have changed!

I'm so relieved I won't have to spend almost $300 on a permit. Great news.

The parking lot next to North Hall (next to bruggers) is usually good (will get busy around 6ish though) and there are quite a few streets you can park on including Enterprise and Hope Street.

isn't there a parking lot right near Winston/Thompkins in between there and Watuga. If you are on Hilsborough street going towards downtown Raleigh, take your right at the belltower, and then take your immediate right. I'm pretty sure you can park there anytime after 5.

^^ True...but not really convenient parking for Tompkins/Winston. Best bet for on-campus parking: spaces alongside 1911 building, parking lot next to Winston or the parking lot in front of Patterson.

I think it will be pretty tough actually, since that new building is taking up 3/4 of the lot. Even when the full lot was open you had to get there just in between most staff leaving and students arriving.

true it may not be as convenient, but you wont have to worry about not finding a spot, or dealing with as much traffic.

You just cant get there too late bc the intramural sports fill up the lot after about 6.

Just the North Hall parking lot as said before, it is never full after 5. It's literally 50 ft from the front of Winston/Tompkins.

If your only classes are after 5, there's no reason to get a permit. Commuter student spots are free after 5pm. Also normal non-reserved faculty spots (e.g. B, not AS) are free after 5.

basically don't get a pass, and if you aren't lazy then there should be no problem at all with finding a spot.

Anywhere after 5 pm, you should be fine.

Just be near the gates around 5, or tell the information people at the gates around 5 pm that you need to pick up someone, and most certainly they would let you through. The latter is the better method as it doesn't require waiting and you will secure a better spot when 5 pm reaches shortly.

That one doesn't open up until 7, if you're referring to the one directly behind Thompson.
