i was reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKNC and it made me wonder: what do they currently use the antenna on the top of the library for? i think i remember seeing some directional antennas or something up there

There are some micro-wave links up there, probably with UNC or Duke library.

The transmitter for WKNC is still in the library just above the 9th floor. And one of the antennas is the WKNC transmitter antenna. But the directional antennas have to do with microwave links for MCNC. From what I've been told they can be used for Internet connectivity in case the main fiber backbone between NCSU and MCNC (or NCREN) was to fail. I am not 100% sure if that's what they are still used for or not, but I believe that was what they were originally used for. If someone here knows more about them please enlighten us. But I do have a picture that will better show the antenna. The WKNC antenna consists of the four curly pieces of metal in the center of the side of the tower shown. The silver things on the sides are directors which direct the majority of the signal generally to the NNW.[Edited on July 11, 2007 at 12:04 PM. Reason : ]
