not where to find one, but how to become one. there's a million certifications out there, so which ones are legit and are the classes local? google wasn't much help in differentiating

your best bet is calling around to local gyms to see who they hire

this is exactly the reason i went the british route.in the uk, they have standardized courses and qualification, which are recognized by YMCA and another org i can't remember.there are course providers which are approved, and they offer all the same courses pretty much, with the same content. once you get your qualification to whatever level you desire, you can have your name put on the national exercise register, and everybody on it is equal, and YMCA vouchsafes for their ability.in the US, i have no clue if there is some central body/system like that.you can do the uk courses too... you study yourself, and then you go for a weekend to the uk for each course you do. during that weekend, they review the concepts with you, show you stuff on the machines/equipment, let you practice all day. next day, you take the MCQ test, and the practical test during which you show that you are able to train someone on all the various equipment and exercises.btw, i am outside the uk, and i did them.

well if i had a couple grand to blow on a trip to england, i might consider that. i'm guessing ACSM is the most recognized, but i don't know if recognition really matters as far as certification

NSCA and ACSM are nationally recognized and legitimate.[Edited on July 8, 2007 at 12:34 AM. Reason : .]

NSCA and ACSM are really good (the tests are REALLY hard though)other okay ones would be ACE, ISSM, NASMTo take the tests it costs a good deal of money (we're talking AT LEAST $250 just for the test itself)I would go check out a few local gyms and see if they have any preferences...no use in paying/studying for/taking an exam if they'll put you through some program themselves and give you clientsEDIT: to OP, let me know how it turns out for you...I'm taking a test with ACE in August (because I'm a cheap bastard and because personal training is going to be a part time gig for me)if I've learned anything through researching/studying it's that experience is your best aid [Edited on July 8, 2007 at 12:36 AM.
