Every once or twice a year I experience some type of allergic reaction that results in a puffy face only in the morning. It usually dies down around noon, and if it lingers it is only in the lips. By this time today, I experienced only lip swelling, and treated it with petroleum jelly around 5am, and again around 10am. It's still painfully stiff and I have trouble speaking, but the major problem for me is that the top lip is so swollen, my front teeth are cutting into the flesh. I'm a graduate and am no longer enrolled at NCSU. I don't have medical insurance and am flat broke, so I can't afford a doctor. Even if I qualified for financial aid, I can't afford the gas to travel from NCSU to the nearest hospital. What are any home remedies to reduce the swelling? I'd press ice against it but the inside of the lip is very sore.[Edited on June 29, 2007 at 12:19 PM. Reason : Forgot to mention, I'm "on my cycle" which happens once every 6 months.]

If its an allergic reaction, then it will only get worse over time. I'd go to the doctor if at all possible,

Try generic benadryl, and if you start wheezing get someone to take you to the ER. They can't refuse treatment b/c you can't pay.

Ok, I'll get some when I can afford it, thanks.

That used to happen to me and then I found out I was allergic to sunscreen (it was in the chapstick I was using.)

I don't use skin cream or any other "liquid" product, lol, just generic brands that have never given me a problem ever since I was 12. Only bumping this thread because, yes, my lips are still puffed and aching like I got punched in the mouth! (And to those who want to troll, no, I haven't.)

A only semi-informed opinion-If it is related to your cycle, then try to see if theres a food or something else you eat during that time that you just haven't thought about.Alternatively- horomones fuck EVERYTHING up (i know this), so it might be something else screwy there, esp if you're only on 2x a year.

Does it happen around the same time of year, e.g. spring/fall?
6/30/2007 10:36:01 PM
No, only in the early spring. I was going to mention this before but didn't want to btt my own thread. As far as ^^ is concerned, I have been eating about once a day for the past few weeks and haven't had this type of problem; it's only been today and yesterday. And thanks for reminding me about the hormones; I don't menstruate but every so often so I'm not really used to the side effects!^It usually happens around March when the flowers are blooming, so I assumed it was related to allergies. I have already had the large-lip syndrome this year when I was taking final exams (I think my prof read my thread online about getting a beat-down by my bf and assumed my large lower-lip was relationship-related, though it wasn't). Since it was already over and done with this spring, I was hoping it wouldn't return, but it has, and boy does it hurt...

OK, I'm not a medical doctor, but my thoughts as a layman:If it always happens around the same time of year then I would agree with you that it is likely an allergy. Your symptoms sound very serious and could progress, as noted by another, so I think you should see a Dr. about this as soon as you can. It would not be good if your throat decided to swell shut or for you to go into anaphalatic shock, for example. If you can't afford one then consider a free clinic or emergency room visit while you are still symptomatic (like tomorrow morning). I'll bet that they give you a steroid for the swelling. Also, lose the bf if you haven't already.

might help to get a job where you make money instead of living off tony's social security.
