pretty funny. elizabeth edwards calls in to Hardball and calls out ann coulter.
Quote :
" Chris Matthews: You know who's on the line? Somebody to respond to what you said Edwards yesterday morning -- Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards go on the line you're on the line with Ann Coulter

Elizabeth Edwards: Hello, Chris.

Matthews: You wanna say something directly to the person who's with me?

Edwards: I'm calling you … in the South when someone does something that displeases us, we wanna ask them politely to stop doing it. Uh - I'd like to ask Ann Coulter -- if she wants to debate on issues, on positions -- we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today -- but uh it's quite another matter for these personal attacks that the things she has said over the years not just about John but about other candidates. It lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity … to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.

Ann Coulter: OK, so I made a joke -- let's see six months ago -- and as you point out they've been raising money off of it for six months since then.

Matthews: This is yesterday morning, what you said about him.

Coulter: I didn't say anything about him actually either time.

Edwards: Ann, you know that's not true. And once more its been going on for sometime.

Coulter: I don't mind you trying to raise money. I mean it's better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor.

Edwards: I'm asking you.

Coulter: Just to use my name on the Web pages…

Edwards: I'm asking you politely…

Coulter: … but as for a debate with me, um yeah, sure. Yeah, we'll have a debate

Edwards: I'm asking you politely to stop personal attacks.

Coulter: How bout you stop raising money on the Web page then?

Edwards: It didn't start it did not...

Coulter: No you don't have cause I don't mind

Edwards: It did not start with that you had a column a number of years ago

Coulter: OK, great the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking...

Matthews: Let her finish the point...

Coulter: You're asking me to stop speaking, stop writing columns, stop writing your books.

Matthews: OK, Ann. Please.

Coulter: OK

Edwards: You wrote a column a couple years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean's death, and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car that said ask me about my dead son. This is not legitimate political dialogue.

Coulter: That's now three years ago --

Edwards: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you're using this kind of language.

Coulter: Yeah why isn't John Edwards making this call?

Matthews: Well do you want to respond and we'll end this conversation?

Edwards: I haven't talked to John about this call.

Coulter: This is just another attempt for –

Edwards: I'm making this call as a mother. I'm the mother of that boy who died. My children participate -- these young people behind you are the age of my children. You're asking them to participate in a dialogue that's based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues and I don't think that's serving them or this country very well.

[Applause from the crowd]

Matthews: Thank you very much Elizabeth Edwards. (Turning to Coulter) Do you want to -- you have all the time in the world to respond.

Coulter: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No. "

Thats just silly

1) Coulter was attacking Edwards' character, not mocking his dead son.
2) Coulter made the single comment 3 years ago and now that she's back in the political spotlight Elizabeth Edwards wants to use it generate sympathy.

I don't ask someone to stop speaking 3 years after they offend me on one occasion.

Yeah, seriously...by bringing this up, Edwards is basically proving Coulter right. By the looks of it, "Ask me about my dead son..." is right.

Ann Coulter is a cunt, no doubt about it, and she makes her living being a cunt, I'm not sure if thats an excuse or makes it worse, but either way Elizabeth Edwards is going to fuck up her husbands chances.

Quote :
" Edwards: I haven't talked to John about this call."

Seriously, if you're the wife of a presidential candidate, you don't do shit without asking your husband's advisers first. This isn't a sexist thing, the exact same goes for Bill Clinton with regards to Hillary.

Either way, Elizabeth made that asinine comment about her neighbor a few months ago so it is really the pot calling the kettle black.

I don't think the two comments can be compared. Coulter's is much, much worse.

However, it looks like Coulter's comment was right. I'd totally forgotten about the Edwards' kid until Elizabeth brought that joke up again. So maybe they do want to constantly remind us of that tragedy in their lives...

yeeaaahhh. True. Except that I'm not sure how much of what Ann Coulter says is real, and what is just business. Which really makes it worse.

Elizabeth's comments were ignorant and poorly thought out, but not really meant to cause emotional harm I don't imagine. Still, its not helping her husband.

^ I concede.

^ But why bring up that point when she's dying of cancer?

So if she was indeed looking to pull for sympathy/tears/support for her husband why not just bring up that "money maker"?

Because she wasn't. Elizabeth called in to ask her to stop making personal attacks. Coulter just danced around her statements pretending she never said them.

Telling your neighbor to quit having guns and telling someone to die, are two different things. But I can see what you mean by "personal attacks" in a broad sense.

The name of this thread should be Elizabeth Edwards Pwns Ann Coulter.

Cause they don't want to look like they're using the "money maker." Perhaps they're not purposefully trying to gain sympathy by mentioning their son, but unconsciously...? Perhaps. It happens all the time.

I don't know how I would act if somebody called me out on something I said years ago. Coulter has to sell books just like Edwards needs votes. As obnoxious and horrible Coulter is, I don't think even she could bounce back from saying something like, "Hell yeah, I said it. I hope your husband dies, and I think you two are always out for fucking sympathy cause of your dead fucking son." Especially when she was supposedly "joking" when she said those things. It's clear E. Edwards wouldn't settle for "I was just joking..."

Coulter is trash--we all know it. And we expect more from Elizabeth Edwards. We expect her to avoid akward situations like the one scribed in this thread. So...did she really pwn Coulter?

^ i see your points, but i think you are a little too trusting of people's motives.

and did we really expect more from Edwards? i mean he does a)need the press b) need the $texas and c) need more support.

however if this is Elizabeth's last greta shot (b/c of elections not death) to shove it up Coulter's ass on national TV, why not?

the more you ignore AC, the more she keeps saying shit like "a majority of our military soldiers agree with me and Rush" right after she said "we should just not worry about killing massive amounts of civies over there", and getting away with it. you know?

I watched the video and AC got beat up. She was just mocking and dancing and laughing it all off as if people respected her. Sad really.

Yeah, just like Edwards wearing his son's outward bound pin throughout the 2004 campaign and bringing up his dead son in court to garner sympathy from the jury.

Reminds me of Jim Webb wearing his son's combat boots throughout his senate campaign and then saying that he wasn't going to politicize the fact that his son is in Iraq - then being a dick to the president and immediately calling GQ to tell them about it.

I just hate political douchebaggery in general.

How can I be too trusting of folks' motives?

I'm suggesting that 1) Coulter is out to sell books and 2) the Edwards are out to gain sympathy and appear anti-dirty politics.

You, on the other hand, are suggesting that Coulter is everything we think we are (which she is) BUT that Elizabeth Edwards genuinely just wants to stop personal attacks.

The faggot joke:

Her defense was she was just using schoolyard childish name calling which doesn't require defending. And the rest of her defense is that she didn’t realize a national conservative entertainment figure speaking in front of a lot of cameras would get much attention because there weren’t a whole lot of people in the room.

Here is her calling clinton gay:

And just for fun:

Yes, I think it's likely the case that Elizabeth Edwards brought this up when she did for politically motivated reasons.

However I also think that when someone makes fun of your dead son, it pretty much gives you a blank check in my book to take a shot like this right back for whatever the fuck reason you want.

I find it difficult to defend Ann Coulter--but I will defend her right to say what some think are indefensible things. After all, it's most often the liberals that are scheming to silence opposing viewpoints in this country.

At any rate, I often find myself agreeing with the premise of what Coulter is saying, while physically wincing at the way she chose to say it. The Jersey Girls incident comes to mind.

It's a shame that Coulter chooses to be so inflammatory in her remarks. Though the remarks in question generate a lot of money for her and groups on both sides of the aisle, I think that she would communicate her positions more effectively without the bomb-throwing.

And that phony John Edwards doesn't deserve to be elevated in the debate at issue or any other because of Coulter's dumb comments. I mean, she's just helping him, which isn't very smart.

what she said was, "John Edwards has a bumper sticker on the back of his car saying, 'ask me about my dead son'."

Edwards, of course did not have a bumper sticker. such was Coulter's "joke" on what she believed was John Edwards' talking too often about the death of his son (which had occurred only a year or so previous) in many of his public speeches at that time.

I, personally, can't begin to fathom what it must be like to have your only son killed at a young age.

Can you? I mean, really... can you begin to understand the emotional/psychological/spiritual hell it must be for a parent to lose their child?

you dont have kids? okay, imagine how your parents might feel if you got ran over by a bus and died tomorrow.

i imagine they might want to fucking TALK ABOUT IT. thats not politicising. like it or not, the fact is the Edwards' are a public couple, so when they talk, it tends to be publicised.

and you really ought to think before you try to defend that goony piece of evil trash.

this is clear desperation. Edwards is down in polls and they are trying everything they can to get some attention.

Complaining of something 3 years ago? While distasteful, it was more an attack on John, not his son. If you cant handle a bad comedian making a bad joke, you have no business in the whitehouse.

ann coulter (who typically is well composed) looked like a deer in headlights (even though you couldnt see her eyes) during that phone call. she had a nervousness in her voice and was struggling to form sentences.

its funny to see people like that get caught off-guard sometimes. especially someone like ann coulter.

I've read the comment. Maybe "made fun of" isn't the best terminology, but it comes the closest. At the very least she made a joke that involved the dead son as an integral part. Either way I stand by what I said, Edwards gets cart blanche to say whatever the fuck they want to her, far as I'm concerned.

I agree with this part:

Quote :
"C: Right, as opposed to bankrupting doctors by giving a schyster Las Vegas routine in front of juries based on science [removed side comment] doing these psychic routines in front of illiterate juries to bankrupt doctors who now can’t deliver babies, and to charge a poverty group $50,000 for a speech."

I still view John Edwards as nothing more than an ambulance chaser... but other than that, Coulter is a retarded cunt.

Basically, a skinnier, right wing version of Rosie O'donnell.

I am glad Elizabeth Edwards called Coulter out on her crap. The day before this occurred, Coulter wished that Edwards would be killed by terrorists, which makes all prior comments relevant when Coulter was trying to down play everything.

This is a no win situation for the Edwards among conservative groups. They would have been spineless not to respond or they are looking for press if they do. I would have done the same thing in a similar situation.

He said in New Hampshire and in Iowa.

From your first link, the Iowa polls currently show Edwards with a +1.2 point lead.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/ia/iowa_democratic_caucus-208.html

He's a pretty distant third in New Hampshire though:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/nh/new_hampshire_democratic_primary-194.html

Polls in New Hampshire are notoriously bad though, Dean, Clinton, and Buchannan are all examples that completely bucked the prevailing wisdom in NH. Dean because he was on top and fell miserably, Buchannan because he was nowhere on the radar and won (though obviously lost the overall primary) and Clinton because that is where he first started looking like a contender.

Make no mistake, the Edwards campaign isn't doing well, but all is not lost yet.

The freedom to speak does not protect you from the backlash of your words.

Also, there are levels of speech that have different levels of protection. This is low level, white trash speech that borderlines on libel. It would be different if it was unpopular political ideas.

so she's selective about how she interprets the bill of rights

she only hates the free speech that paints her in a negative light

i doubt she'd be up in arms if something was said about another candidate

but none of that changes the fact that the modern day political stage is like that...if you cant deal with it i dont think pres/1st lady is the right position for you, because its not gonna get any better
