OK I have browsed the internetz for info about this but I would like a TWW-no bullshit response. Many other sites have companies they are pushing to sell you hosting, etc. Anyway, what is the cheapest way to get your own webpage without having to use lameass.com/user or some page like that. I also do not want to pay $15/month for a domain and have to pay server or whatever all that other shite is. Obviously I have never had my own webpage other than when I was at NCSU in C115 class and designed a webpage on the NCSU network with like 5 words and 10 pics on there. (maybe that is still out there? for old times sake haha) Anyway, any first hand info would be greatly appreciated. I would like a site to host pics and video and family info.-no pron. So instead of emailing pics, etc to everyone, we could have our own site that people could check on every now and then. (oh and I am aware of snapfish, etc. I just get tired of their formatting, login, etc)

dreamhost</thread>actually... I use site5.com, but you get the idea. You're looking at ~100 per year for just about everything you could want.[Edited on June 20, 2007 at 11:59 AM. Reason : more info]

^ agreed.yeah, you can get a domain registered plus basic hosting for a couple of buck a month. even godaddy isn't going to charge you $15/month for that.https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?ci=9009$3.99/month will be plenty for your needs.]]

Thanks to both of you. Now I have an idea of what it would take to get off the ground with this thing. Oh and Bobby, good luck with your firstborn in January. Maybe it will not be too long before you find yourself pushing the racecar shopping cart around food lion or creating a webpage to put your kids pics/videos on. haha.

^^^I used to have Site5 about 2 years ago, but switched over to Dreamhost b/c I never really used any of the domains I had I'm looking into setting up a couple real sites soon though -- what is Site5 like now?

I've been with ehost.net for a couple years now. If you only have 1 domain you can host it for $10 / year with unlimited disk space and 10GB of transfers / month. Perfect if you are just running a personal web site. You can register the domain through someone else and just set up the DNS to point to the ehost server. I've had a couple problems or requests in the past and they have extremely responsive support.

Ok this may be another retarted question, but with a windows PC, not a server or whatever, what would I need to get from these sites? I assume the site hosting my webpage for me would cover all this shite correct? or will i have to update my home PC to handle this. From what I understand, you just upload your webpage via the hosting site's program, etc. Also (now that I have asked retarted question #2), is this do-able for the average college educated person that does not work in the computer field? Thanks again for putting up with my Qs.

Just need an FTP client (there are plenty of free ones) to upload the files. The host will provide you with all the login info. Then you just transfer your files to the server. You can write HTML in Notepad or you can find free / cheap HTML editors online. Many web host (ehost included) provide Fantastico which is basically a one-click installation of different popular blog apps, content managers, etc. You can then tweak the code once it's installed to make it look exactly like you want.Like anything there are varying degrees of complexity. If you want a simply HTML page with some pictures, you could probably do that in Notepad with little time invested. If you want more dynamic content, you'll have to spend some time learning CSS, JavaScript, and other more advanced web code.

i bought a 1u server off of ebay for like $490and i'm paying $95/month to colo it with an unmetered 10mbps connection

I use 1and1.com and like them pretty well, starts at like 4 bucks a month including domain registration
6/20/2007 5:12:44 PM
ditto, I have 1and1 business account and they are pretty good. I can host multiple domains effortlessly with them (just as godaddy and other companies). Domain name registrations cost about $5.99 a year or so. Hosting is what will cost you some money, but even simple plans of $4 a month is easy. Just find a friend who has hosting already and just buy a domain and link it to his hosting, then setup a ftp to specific folder under his hosting you can upload and download files for your website easily.

lunarpages looks great to me, probably going to be getting a package from them in about a week... judging by reviews and stats (i compared to dreamhost as well) this one seems the way to go... if anybody has any knowledge contrary to this, go for it
