6/19/2007 10:08:40 AM
Shit who cares? NetFlix rents both at no extra charge. Just go for that if you really wanna rent and have an HD-DVD.
6/19/2007 10:11:33 AM
I guess in a year they'll come out with one that plays both after everybody chooses one or the other.

I think you're silly if you don't think this is big news for the format war. You have to think outside the box.Blockbuster will be purchasing a whole lot of BluRay discs, and 0 HD-DVD discs. That's huge right there.Just the fact that the biggest movie rental business (I know its a dying business, but still...) has made a choice says something about the industry, to the industry, and to the consumers. If people are thinking about purchasing a next gen media player, they will definitely take this into consideration.

You can get a blu ray player for $499 and an HD DVD player for $399 now. They prices are coming down to where DVD players started to hit critical mass.If you want though, you can pay $1300 for a top of the line Panasonic blu ray, or $1200 for a really nice LG dual-format player.
6/19/2007 3:08:39 PM
the peons at BB will see blu-ray movies and that just might be a factor in their future purchase....
6/19/2007 3:47:02 PM
^^^agreed

Breaking News: Movies still SUCK!http://www.uploadyourimages.com/view/293241videovsquality.jpg[Edited on June 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM. Reason : .]

the dual format player is LG not samsung and it's still cheaper to buy an hd-dvd player and blu-ray player separately so it's really a moot point
6/19/2007 9:20:06 PM
not if you buy the monster cables
6/19/2007 9:34:07 PM
i was j/k

If the big retail chains (Best Buy, CC, Wal-Mart) follow this up by also pulling HD-DVDs of their shelves, then yeah, this will probably be looked at as the tipping of the "format war". But by itself it doesn't mean anything. The real winner will be the first format that all those Chinese manufacturers that make $20 DVD players choose. Because if it gets to the point where they can make HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players for a negligible cost increase, then they'll just stop making regular DVD players altogether, since unlike DVD to VHS, both the HD formats are fully backwards compatible.

New DVD release: $19.99New HD-DVD/BluRay release: $29.99I'll just stop buying movies when DVDs finally disappear.

you can get HD-DVD's from blockbuster online, however. So they are buying HD-DVD's, just not renting in store.
