My cherokee finally quit on me and ended up buying a 97 jetta GL with 55k miles. Anyone know of a chip I can put in it to get more power and better mpg?

This magic chip you speak of, is it made of wood?

97 gl is a 2.o 8vThere are several chips available, none will make alot of power, 6-8hp is about all you are going to get.

its a jetta, why do you care how much power it has just get a flower lei for the mirror and call it a day

i dont care about hp, just mpg

more power and more MPG generally don't go together.

Yeah, may as well find a chip to remove your engine's tiny little balls, and then you might get a very very modest increase in MPG at the expense of what little acceleration you had.Seriously, that's the 2.0L non-turbocharged, yes? That's as good as it gets. They should get in the 30's range as far as MPG I think. If you think whatever you're getting is too low, get it a tune up. New air filter, new spark plugs. Check the tire inflation. That's about all you can do. :E

chip wont do much in terms of fuel economyand, yes, 97 was a 2.0 na 8v

why get a 2.0 diesels get better mileage and 1.8s are more fun .

2.0L are bullet proof though. There are chips which can yield more power (marginal) and better gas mileage (somewhat), however, they all require premium (91/93 octane) fuel.[Edited on June 18, 2007 at 8:16 AM. Reason : .]

^^ and the diesels are only a little slower

When I had my 2.0 (auto) (RIP), on a trip to VA, I was getting 35 miles per gallon @ 65-70 mph.Around Raleigh I got 20-22 miles per gallon. As a comparison, in my VR6 (manual) on a trip to NJ, I was getting ~27 miles per gallon @ 70-75 mph.Around Raleigh, 20-22 mpg.
