I'll be in San Jose next week for work, but I'll have evenings to myself and one entire day to sightsee. To anyone that's been there - is there anywhere that you'd recommend going or places I should check out while I'm there?

who are you working for in San Jose? I almost went there on a Cisco CoOp. I now kinda regret not going out there for this summer/fall but it was going to put me a semester further behind then I already am and i felt it was a huge hassle just to work for 8 months. After i would be hauling all my shit back to Raleigh for my final 1 & 1/2 semester of school I think this fall I am going to apply for Cisco and various other Silicon Valley positions to see if i can land a job and possibly start my career on the West Coast. Keep us posted on how you like it.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 10:30 PM. Reason : l]

There are a lot of bars in San Pedro Square downtown but San Jose is pretty spread out and corporate. Your better off going out to the Peninsula (san francisco) if you can swing it... But in the Square there is a great pizza place called Amici's (the only true NY pizza out here I've found) for food and there is a decent Irish pub I think called O'Flanerys or something.. There are at least 5-7 bars in that area though but the only time I went out there I was already drunk so I don't know..I live like 45 minutes north of SJ in the East Bay and only ever really went down there for a Sharks game b/c it is pretty much the boring area of the Bay...http://www.sanpedrosquare.com/neigh.html^ yeah, cisco, google, yahoo, and ebay are all in the same corporate park pretty much right down in San Jose and Mountain View... oracle is pretty close by too.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 11:29 PM. It's just a rail system. Prices aren't too bad and it can get you to downtown SF in like 35 mins..just do a google search for caltrain*** I live like 25 miles east of the city and it's $8.50 roundtrip on BART to get to downtown and back... I'm moving in a month so it'll only be a short 5 minute walk to the station..[Edited on June 13, 2007 at 2:14 PM. Reason : x]

^^I'm leaving the 23rd, so I'll give you the 411 on what's good to do. All the interns I'm going with are party people, so I'm sure we'll find lots of places to have a good time.

So here's the scoop so far -Firetower brewery in Sunnyvale - good beer, great service, and they have food, but we didn't go to eat Santana Row - the Glenwood South of San Jose. Food, bars, shopping, you name it. I would recommend going here, but if you go to Maggiano's, don't settle for the punk kid wanabe waiter. The service that night sucked ass, and the tip reflected it. Otherwise, good food.Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. - If you want to make the 45min to an hour trek out to Half Moon Bay, this place is awesome. The food is good, on average < $20/person, and they have GREAT house-brewed beer. I got a 10-beer sampler platter and there wasn't one thing on there that I didn't like. If you're down for the trip, I highly, highly recommend this place.Downtown San Jose has their fair share of bars and clubs, but the only place there we went was a bar caled Tres Gringos. It was a pretty "frat-tastic" atmosphere, but altogether okay. They had a special when we went Wednesday night where you got a pitcher of beer + cups and balls for beer pong. Pretty fun time. There's a lot of different bars there - plenty of choices if you're into more upscale things too.Today and tomorrow will be spent exploring the area andfinding cool stuff to see. Fry's is only thing on the agenda for today, and Palo Alto and/or San Francisco is tomorrow.
