1. Guns 'N Roses - Appetite For DestructionThis is, in my mind, the yardstick by which rock and roll should be measured. There are good bands out there with greatest hits albums that aren't as solid as Appetite.2. Alice in Chains - DirtNirvana and Pearl Jam were/are (were?) great bands and justifiably received tons of attention and praise...Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone did some great stuff, too...but none of them EVER made a complete album that could stand up to this--but the music world barely noticed! (especially you, Pearl Jam. Jesus...what a great example of how NOT to make a complete album, with a handful of killer tracks and a bunch of bullshit to fill it out)3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex MagikNot to discredit their great earlier work or the fleeting moments of brilliance they've shown since, but this was definitely the high water mark. Every song on the album is great or better, and nothing else I can think of sounds like it. They show some range, but mostly do the things they do best with the pedal to the metal the entire time.4. Metallica - Master Of PuppetsEvery tune on it is killer, and it all but defined a genre. As the saying goes, if you look up "heavy metal" in the dictionary, there's a picture of this album.5. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of the MoonHelped introduce us to the concept album, put Pink Floyd on the map big time, made strides in production techniques (picked up where the Beatles left off after they quit touring and got trippy), and does some freaky shit when you play it simultaneously with the Wizard of Oz.honorable mentions: Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers...and list to be continued

i like Steve Miller Band and all, but you can't include a greatest hits album.and yeah, i thought about Led Zeppelin, too (and in fact own most of their stuff on vinyl). i was in a hurry, though, and didn't have time to sort through their albums and pick my favorite(s).tool makes some solid albums, but not quite on the order of the stuff i listed, in my opinionthe beatles are a favorite of mine (both early and later), but they never made an album that i can think of where i really, really like every song (although Sgt Pepper's is a really good album)the doors are a great band, and LA Woman is a pretty good album, but it would never make my list. I actually prefer, as a collection of songs, their first, self titled album.American Beauty (Dead) is another one I have on vinyl, and yeah, that's a great album. I'll agree with you there on the honorable mention.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 10:40 AM. Reason : i have a few more to at least honorably mention, but out of time again]
6/10/2007 10:39:45 AM
1. rage against the machine - rage against the machine[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 11:25 AM. Reason : queen's greatest hits, but.. is that really an album?]

6/10/2007 12:05:18 PM

6/10/2007 2:47:57 PM
^ huh
6/10/2007 3:00:56 PM
Bruce Springsteen - Born to RunBilly Joel - The StrangerMeat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
6/10/2007 3:04:09 PM

6/10/2007 3:10:36 PM
PINK FLOYD AND ROCK!!!!!give me a break
6/10/2007 3:12:35 PM
The problem I have with my generation is that they do not understand the difference between "rock and roll" and "hard rock."^^ Case in point.
6/10/2007 3:15:11 PM
Lou Reed - metal machine music
6/10/2007 3:16:57 PM
i understand the differencebut i'm trying to cover the entire rock genreas you can see by my including both Metallica and Pink Floydand I have to give honorable mentions to the Black Crowes for both Shake Your Moneymaker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 3:19 PM. 6/10/2007 3:25:16 PM
6/10/2007 3:26:51 PM
i like the Boss (got Born To Run and his box set on vinyl) and Billy Joel (I can mostly do without Meat Loaf, although I've heard him do a couple of songs I liked), but I wouldn't vote either of them onto the best overall rock album of all time list.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 3:33 PM. Reason : asdfasdfsdf]
6/10/2007 3:32:33 PM
Say what you will. But there has not been a rock and roll album released since the mid-eighties.
6/10/2007 3:32:52 PM
Malice you are a thundercunt, go run into a knife.^you keep saying "rock and roll" like it makes you an authority on the subject and separates it from everything. this thread specifically says "ROCK"ALL ENCOMPASSINGeven if you are right about your "rock and roll" (which you aren't), it doesn't matter in this thread[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 3:41 PM. well the initial list was lame as a mofo. My grandma could make a better rockthis thread is bunk
6/10/2007 3:37:25 PM
^^^ black crowesnot to mention stuff like Cry Of Love (from Raleigh, no less), Cross Canadian Ragweed, Lost Trailers, Son Volt, Drivin' & Cryin', etcTom Petty has released some material since thenhell, i'd even argue Spin Doctorscan't imagine that all of those wouldn't fall under even the toughest purist's definition of "rock & roll"[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 3:39 PM. true rock and roll died in the late 70s and was ultimately killed by mtvthe 60s provided the perfect conditions for rock music to emerge. i.e. the drugs, vietnam, the counterculture, and the musical geniuses of the timeits not a fluke that the greatest and most revered albums of all time were mostly created in a span of less than 10 years^uh yes[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 4:22 PM. 6/10/2007 4:21:23 PM
Pet Sounds is more pop than it is anything else.
6/10/2007 4:25:25 PM
ok in all seriousness Iggy Pop - Idiot and Lust for Lifethose two are in my top 10
6/10/2007 4:27:48 PM
i consider it more rock than pop, it was brilliantly written and highly experimental. it also profoundly influenced sgt. pepper according to paul. it actually broke the beach boys image as a pop groupits also regarded as one of the best albums ever recorded .. thats why i would consider it as one of the best OVERALL rock albums
6/10/2007 4:35:13 PM
A rock group making a pop album does NOT make the album "rock."experimental =/= rock, tooI never said it was a bad album, it's one of my favorites. But for god's sake, it's pop music.[Edited on June 10, 2007 at 4:37 PM. Reason : seriously, this thread is about rock albums]
