http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/I'm sure every media outlet will be talking about this tomorrow, but in case any of you live under a rock, here's the new ads for the iPhone (I liked the Calamari one the best). The release date is the 29th of June.
6/3/2007 10:50:13 PM
droooool....haven't seen any of the ads yet. but damn! apple at it again with great commercials. That phone is so sick. I love the horizontal/vertical transitions.
6/3/2007 11:30:43 PM
i want to get one, but I'm gonna give it a generation
6/4/2007 12:16:59 AM
after a generation you might be too old for it
6/4/2007 12:29:30 AM
fucking christ.i knew i had forgotten to save up for something
6/4/2007 9:12:09 AM
6/4/2007 9:14:42 AM
Considering my Alltel contract runs out in 1 year, it'd be ideal if Alltel/Verizon snap up the iPhone generation 2 during the next 12 months.I'm not going GSM -- CDMA just has too much range.
6/4/2007 9:15:04 AM
^ they won't. i read somewhere that AT&T had an exclusive 5-year contract for the iPhone. might not be true, though. but concerning generations - yeah, I would definitely wait until the 2nd or 3rd generation for the almost guaranteed upgrades of more storage, better battery, and GPS.
6/4/2007 9:28:27 AM
i don't think the storage size matches up with the amount of shit they're showing on the commercials. i think people forget these things have 1/10th the storage of an iPod
6/4/2007 9:44:09 AM
^agreed, the minuscule storage on these things pretty much eliminates any interest i might've had.Guess I'll have to wait for the iPod that features all these nifty enhancements.
6/4/2007 10:17:28 AM
i really really really really wanted one, and still do, but i think it'd be wiser to wait til the 2nd gen at least. i guess i'll wait.
6/4/2007 11:50:55 AM
Do they have a micro/miniSD slot?
6/4/2007 1:35:54 PM
ooo. good question.
6/4/2007 1:37:39 PM
nohttp://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html
6/4/2007 1:39:38 PM
what's that vertical slot-looking thing on the side?[Edited on June 4, 2007 at 1:51 PM. Reason : oh. is that the ipod connector dealy?]
6/4/2007 1:43:01 PM
maybe a memory card slot of some sort?or sim card but i doubt it.
6/4/2007 1:53:36 PM
In the keynote speech the Jobs made about the phone he stated that the side slot was for the sim card.
6/4/2007 2:12:41 PM
It has a sim card slot.
6/4/2007 2:17:18 PM
No 3G no buy. Seriously Apple, wtf?
6/4/2007 3:04:33 PM
^ Yeah, for a mobile phone that costs $500, I'd really expect 3G support, no matter how flashy it is.
6/4/2007 4:13:30 PM
so then what doesnt it have?no 3gno gpswhat else is it lacking?
6/4/2007 4:16:37 PM
Built in GPS probably isn't a huge deal, considering you can get Bluetooth GPS receivers these days. 3G is simply a deal breaker though. A Cingular 8525 is a much better choice right now.
6/4/2007 4:30:36 PM
^I disagree. For a phone that proudly advertises Google Maps as one of its main features, the lack of GPS is inexcusable.
6/4/2007 4:32:23 PM
^ me too. I wasn't going to buy one anyway (i have 1 year left with Verizon, and will wait until 2nd gen+ anyway) but I think the biggest exclusions are 1) GPS and 2) storage space. The lack of GPS really annoys me, especially for how much they have been going on and on about Google Maps. See Scoble's recent review of the Nokia N95 for what a Map-enabled phone/pda should be able to dohttp://scobleizer.com/2007/06/03/the-better-iphone-nokia-n95/video here - http://www.puremobile.com/Nokia/Nokia-N95-Silver-Deep-Plum-GSM-Phone/

1. Nerds fume in disgust over version 1.2. The rest of the world will lap it up because they doesn't give a fuck about GSM vs CDMA.3. Apple will address nerd complaints in later versions, as economics justify further developments.4. Nerds grudgingly succumb to the Apple juggernaut.5. Steve Jobs drops LSD with above average hookers.[Edited on June 4, 2007 at 7:30 PM. Reason : sdf]
6/4/2007 7:28:46 PM
yall correct me if i'm wrong but don't all cell phones have gps now? i thought it was a law for 911.... if so probably will be an update
6/4/2007 8:10:19 PM
no, they just have to be able to locate you to within x number of feet (it was a progressive number so i am not sure what it is now) you dont need gps to locate someone with that precision using gsm
6/4/2007 8:15:24 PM
don't they just triangulate your position via cell phone towers anyway?
6/4/2007 8:18:45 PM
Which begs the question, why couldn't some clever person write an application to use cellphone towers rather than GPS satellites to determine location (even if it isn't as good as GPS, ballpark would be fine for google maps purposes)?
6/4/2007 8:25:22 PM
you'd need access to the data, which you don't normally have access to.
6/4/2007 11:30:14 PM
^exactly.
6/4/2007 11:49:56 PM
Not quite. http://www.accutracking.com/This software says it will tell you the location of the nearest cell tower to get a rough estimate of position. They don't do triangulation or any sophisticated tracking algorithms, though. I have no doubt that you can get better results with other algorithms.[Edited on June 5, 2007 at 12:23 AM. Reason : All you need is the id of the tower. Everything else is open information or calculation.]
6/5/2007 12:23:01 AM
personally, i would prefer google maps over gps navigation any day. i don't want it telling me which way to go. most of the time the route that google maps, mapquest, whoever gives you isn't the best/quickest/etc anyway. if i need directions, i look the location up in google maps and figure it out myself.
6/5/2007 8:44:12 AM
^It's like you've missed the entire point of having a gps to begin with.
6/5/2007 9:03:42 AM
For Gen 2: put 3G in it, 32GB of flash (or hell, 64GB), GPS, and a removable battery and I'm all over it, Stevie.
6/5/2007 10:45:28 AM
^^well, my point is that i don't want a gps b/c i'm not going to use it...soo..umm..yeah
6/5/2007 11:42:24 AM
but isn't that what being on the forefront of technology is about: having features you'll never use?
6/5/2007 12:50:51 PM
I have GPS in the car...but having GPS on an interface like an iphone would be awesome! I used to love it on my pda via bluetooth before i sat on it and cracked the screen
6/5/2007 12:55:26 PM
So what happens when your ear accidentally bumps one of the buttons that pop up on the screen while you're in the middle of the call?
6/5/2007 2:01:51 PM
there's a proximity detector - when it's near your head, the touchscreen buttons are deactivated.
6/5/2007 2:06:42 PM
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/428001635831^yep, that's not a joke
6/5/2007 6:10:37 PM
wait, they're not in stores yet?I thought apple usually announced new hardware very shortly before putting it in the market
6/5/2007 7:35:09 PM
i have fat fingers though
6/5/2007 8:14:56 PM
^^ yes, usually, but with their two major product releases, they've changed that. THey announced the AppleTV about 6 months before they released it, and same with the iPhone. I think they announced the iPhone early for several reasons: 1) to build anticipation, 2) to beat competitors with similar products to the punch by making their high-profile announcement before competitors announced and released similar products, 3) along the same lines, so they could get all the patents filed before competitors made similar products (patent applications are public, so once they file a patent, it's more or less known what's coming), and 4) because cell phones have to be approved in advance by the FCC, a process which I believe is public, or at least prone to leaks. They submitted the phone a couple months ago, I believe, to the FCC for qualification, so they might as well announce it before submitting it to the FCC. ^ they say the soft-keypad has an intelligent spelling corrector and "accidental click" detection. we'll see how well it works.

6/5/2007 10:08:48 PM
The 3 things I will want to see improve before I buy one:-4-8GB Storage (needs way more)-GSM (3G would be nice)-Battery Life (just longer in general)But damn if I won't be in the store checking this thing out.
6/6/2007 6:18:18 AM
6/6/2007 11:46:00 AM
it seems some people don't know that GSM and 3G are two different things. the iPhone is GSM - it has to be to work on Cingular's networks. 3G is wireless data transfer rates/protocols. It's kind of like 1x vs. EVDO on Verizon's CDMA network.
6/6/2007 12:08:19 PM
i rly want one of these.
6/6/2007 12:18:46 PM
same here simply for the email/ camera integration... i do construction and it would be such an asset to be able to take a photo and email it the way they're showing. damn verizon has all the cool stuff locked out where you have to pay $texas and then you can only send photos to another phone where i need to send them to people's computer
