Movie looks kind of amazing...and I'm not even that big of a Beatles fan.

Quote :
"An original musical film, Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, the killing fields of Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and painted and three-dimensional animation, the film is paired with many Beatles songs that defined the time."

I think this movie looks awesome. Comes out end of Summer I believe.

I saw the trailer for it a while ago. And yeah, it looks like it has the possibility to be cool (Eddie Izzard is even in the cast), but I'm a little worried that it'll solely be pretty or showy instead of a cohesive story. It's almost sounds like they just wanted to make a set of music videos for a bunch of Beatles songs

This movie looks terrible and most of the covers I heard in the preview don't sound any good. I'd much rather smoke a bowl and listen to any actual Beatles album.

^ So when I first read that I didn't get it at all. I was pretty sure that was a title track of theirs but that was pretty much the extent of my knowledge... I wiki'd it, and I can appreciate the joke. Nicely done sir.

I hadn't heard anything about this until I saw a commercial for it a few days ago, and from that I only gathered that it was a Beatles-based musical. As much as I love the Beatles, I'm afraid it won't be any good (or rather, that it will be OK, but won't do justice to the Beatles' legacy).

The movie's main site describes Jude and Lucy as "star-crossed lovers." Anyone know if there's a Romeo and Juliet plot tie-in? Like I said, I really don't know much about it other than the summary at the top.

what I've read is that Lucy is in love with Max, who gets sent to Vietnam. Jude is an English guy that comes to America, meets Lucy and her friends, and I can't tell if they get involved or not.
One review I read said that Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Olivia Harrison, and Ringo Starr have all seen the film...the director watched it when Paul screened it, but of course the reviewer didn't say what Paul felt about it.

I've seen it described as Forest Gump on acid on RT...they only had a few reviews up.

I saw it tonight, the visuals rocked, some of the songs are decent.

my favorite part was Bono doing I Am The Walrus.

I hate U2 but that part was great.

i'm gonna try to see it stoned this weekend and I shall report back.

Quote :
"It was a different story for Wood and her cast mates as they shot the film and contemplated that eventually, their performances would come under scrutiny of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono, John Lennon's wife, and the family of George Harrison.

Wood and co-star Sturgess finally sat through a screening in the company of Starr.

"That was our dream, watching it with a Beatle, because at the end of the day, that's who we cared about the most," Wood said. "Hardcore fans of the Beatles can say what they want, but if we had the Beatles' approval, we kind of felt safe. And Ringo loved it, and Yoko's seen it, and she supports it.

"But the final one was Paul. He was the one we were waiting on, and there was a kind of hesitancy about the whole thing. But he saw the movie with Julie. Julie asked him at the end if there was anything he didn't like, and he said, 'What's not to like?' The clouds parted and the angels sang. That's what we needed. That's what meant the most to us."

watched it today.
thought it was pretty good, so did all the people I watched it with, and considering just about half the audience was staying through the credits and not rushing to leave, I'd guess most people liked it.

I saw this on Saturday and was very impressed. Granted, I like off-beat musicals, and this one is the kind of movie I've been waiting for.

Not to mention that Julie Taymor has a fantastic eye for visuals and the film looks amazing.

dude i heard some of the remakes of the beatles songs on NPR the other day and nearly vomited. How do you people like this stuff? I mean, the remakes sound like cheeky little overdone ditties for paper towel commercials or something. Yuck.

Shame on the remaining Beatles to even let this happen.
