Has anyone's dog ever gotten sick from drinking the water in Lake Johnson? My dog loves to get in the water and drink after we walk there every day. It seems like its not a big deal?
5/28/2007 6:50:15 PM
Are you serious? It shouldnt be a big deal unless its some toxic chemicals in the water and you see all the fish floating on top and birds dead everywhere. I dont think we have changed the immune system of the dog so much that they can only drink pure super clean H2O.
5/28/2007 7:01:22 PM
Yeah im serious. I mean, isn't it possible that there are parasites in lake water that the dog could become infested with?
5/28/2007 7:02:35 PM
your dog licks its own assdon't worry about lake water
5/28/2007 7:06:39 PM
He can get sick, he will get sick. Just a question of when. If you are really want to let him drink from the lake, just try to make sure that the water is not stagnant.

dogs eat cat shit[end of thread]
5/28/2007 8:16:51 PM
[You should not let your dog eat cat shit.] Im gonna ask the vet next time about the lake water. The stuff I read on the internet says not to let them drink it becuase there are certain bacteria and parasites (ex. Giardia and leptospirosis<-this one is zoonotic) that are very common in lake and river waters.
5/28/2007 8:23:15 PM
granted my dogs drink saltwater at the beach, but they always get sick afterwards. it's no big deal. just too much water.
5/28/2007 8:36:00 PM
Depends on the lake. I mean, dogs drink from road puddles and are fine, but it shouldn't be their primary source of water. Some lakes in Raleigh do have issues, and you should be current on which have problems and which don't and act accordingly. If you're concerned, I'd recommend hitting up Petsmart and getting one of the carry on doggy waterers for walks.

make sure your doggie has a lepto vaccine!
5/28/2007 9:24:06 PM
Yeah, get the vaccine and you should be straight. Our dog doesn't go anywhere near a lake but the vet recommended it since our dog could drink out of a puddle or something. Plus the vet got to charge us more money.
5/28/2007 9:34:13 PM
At Lake Johnson, parasites should be the least of your concerns. The water is polluted.
5/28/2007 9:44:30 PM
Is Lepto usually included in the yearly vaccines they get? Or is that something extra? How much does it cost? I'm pretty sure I'm just not going to let her drink the water anymore.

ahh yes, giardia. My girlfriends dog had that one time. Imagine an 80 pound dog's ass exploding into a 3.5' x 5' blast range. Not just normal shit, but a liquid sludge that smelled worse than anything I have ever smelled. That is giardia. And again, He can get sick, he will get sick. Just a question of when.
5/29/2007 7:48:40 AM
Generally lepto is a regular yearly vaccine along with bordetella. You can get a vaccine for guardia, but you have to specially request it.
5/29/2007 9:03:40 AM
why would you let your dog drink out of the lakethey have fucking water fountains wow, you people amaze me w/ how little you think and use common sense
5/29/2007 10:14:39 AM
My aunt had giardia this year She went from slightly skinny to a walking skeleton At least it was something she couldn't have prevented, and couldn't treat. You've willingly exposed your pup to this
5/29/2007 11:26:48 AM
its a dog, it probably swims in the lake. If it shouldnt drink lake water, then it probably shouldnt touch the water either. Or the grass, or the road, or the parking lot. Dogs walk through shit every day, then lick their paws. Yeah your dog might get sick from drinking lake water, but it might get sick on from something on its morning walk. From the sound of things, everybody's dogs and kids would roll around in their own plastic hermetic bubbles.
5/29/2007 3:30:20 PM
WAY TO MISS THE POINTif you know that the water is not clean you dont let your dog swim or drink said water
5/29/2007 3:33:03 PM
the lepto vaccine can be included in the distemper shot. find out if your dog gets a dhpp or a dhLpp.[Edited on May 29, 2007 at 6:58 PM. Reason : ,]

Yeah she swims in the lake after her walk. Its not like she drinks a ton of the water and I never really thought about it because I see other dogs do it all the time. You guys act like I am not giving her fresh water too. How am I going to stop her besides not letting her in the lake? I think everyone has missed my main question: Has anyone's dog ACTUALLY GOTTEN SICK from the lake?
5/29/2007 7:08:22 PM
NEVAR!
5/29/2007 7:14:31 PM
5/29/2007 7:58:57 PM
if the dog drinks too much lake water or drinks the water while swimming it could get sick
5/29/2007 8:18:34 PM
Make sure she's got lepto, sometimes it's done annually with everything else, but at our vet it can be elective since quite a few dogs don't get very much exercise, let alone swim in a lake. I wouldn't bother with the giardia vaccine it's not effective just another worthless expense Banfield piles on top of their clients.

^ Do you even have a dog!? And I have never seen a water fountain anywhere on the trails we go on at Lake Johnson, so I have no idea what you are talking about. YOU have still missed the point AGAIN. I GIVE the dog clean water when we are there! She still wants to drink the lake water when she swims in it. My question again!: HAS ANYONE'S DOG ACTUALLY GOTTEN SICK!?!?! Geez.

they have clean drinking water for the dogs up at the boat house thingie

My dog occasionally gets diarrhea from drinking the lake water by our house. (not Lake Johnson, it's somewhat smaller and dirtier) I tell my mom not to let the dog in the lake, but she doesn't care. A little doggie-giardia every now and then is no big deal to her. ]

^His dog doesn't need to be rushed to a vet right now because it drank lake water two days ago. My god people. Besides, the geese drink that water all the time and never keel over dead.
5/30/2007 12:37:50 PM
hey lutra, where did it say anywhere in Frosh's post that SHE needed to 'rush' the dog to the vet?and by the way a goose and a dog are not built just alike[Edited on May 30, 2007 at 12:59 PM. Reason : sdf]
