I'm looking to purchase a new stainless steel electric range and stainless steel top mount refrigerator.
5/27/2007 6:08:32 PM
well Home Depot has 10% off appliances through Mondayand Lowe's will price match that.
5/27/2007 6:11:16 PM
Cool. Will they let me buy it tomorrow and deliver it at a later date?Any brands that I should check out or avoid?
5/27/2007 6:30:01 PM
GE is a good brandor even LG
5/27/2007 6:48:20 PM
^^Yeah. Lowe's will at least, I don't imagine Home Depot would be any different.
5/27/2007 9:45:52 PM
When it comes to appliances -- Sears. Don't screw around. Only use the others to bring Sears down on price.
5/27/2007 9:48:49 PM
look at consumer reports, they are going to tell you to get a kenmore from sears.
5/27/2007 9:50:07 PM
Seriously - Sears is the way to go. They have always done the right thing and make great products.
5/27/2007 9:52:12 PM
Isn't Kenmore just a rebranded whirlpool?
5/27/2007 10:22:07 PM
yep. sure is.
5/27/2007 10:28:03 PM
Working for a custom home builder, we get all of our appliances from The Appliance Center. But I'm not sure how their retail prices/specials compair to Sears, Lowes, etc since we get them at a discount as a builder
5/28/2007 9:53:29 AM
Which builder?
5/28/2007 9:59:20 AM
Just read consumer reports. Hotpoint got some good ratings, but I've never heard of them.
5/28/2007 10:12:56 AM
great choice on the stainless steel appliances...they are awesome. if i hadn't bought a house that was already hooked up with nice appliances that the seller left, i would definitely have gone stainless steel.
5/28/2007 12:18:08 PM
Thanks. They should go well with my cabinet/countertop/floor color scheme. Off to the stores!
5/28/2007 12:19:47 PM
Ferguson has lots of nice stuff...
5/28/2007 12:23:15 PM
5/28/2007 4:42:38 PM
Thanks for all the info. Just got finished buying all my appliances.
5/28/2007 7:59:39 PM
what did you get
5/29/2007 12:42:04 AM
used restaurant supply stores on ebay.
5/29/2007 1:36:16 AM
Do you feel like you don't have much choice? Do you feel like everything for sale is 100 year old technology wrapped in advanced new marketing? This is your heritage: consumers before you dollar-selected Piece of Shit appliances that work predictably in lieu of new whiz-bang good stuff. I recommend you learn how to do each home economics procedure in primitive ways to give you perspective. then, when you feel like you have backup techniques, you can knowledgably seek out ever more effective and efficient devices without retisance. Ever notice how nowhere makes it clear how much detergent to use per volume of water or laundry?
5/29/2007 2:53:33 AM
We had a hot point stove, it worked great and was better priced than others. My father lives off of consumer reports, but he's gotten some things that they advised that turned out to be shitty, so it just depends.

kenmore is rebranded lots-of-other-brands, not just whirlpool. what i did, and what i would suggest, is shop around to figure out exactly what you like (not just top mount, but the type of handles, shelving, water filters, all the details), look online for any reviews, recalls, etc, then do the price matching stuff. i mean, if you're picky. if you don't care what it looks like, go straight to price matching.i bought a maytag dishwasher and a whirlpool fridge (i didn't need a range).home depot was THE worst place i shopped. they only had around 3 different appliance of each type to choose from and it was very hard to get an employee to help. i also looked at lowes, best buy, sears, and a local small town guy here. i bought everything from lowes b/c you can easily find 10-20% off coupons online and they price match of course.

We're about to "furnish" a new kitchen and we're picking appliances. I've had success in the past with most electronics and appliances by weeding out the bad stuff through customer reviews. This time around I'm finding that they're all pretty even with most things falling in the 4-star range.Any brands I should be avoiding? We're going standard sizes for the most part. Refrigerator choices are somewhat limited as the wife wants french doors (I'm cool with) with internal water dispenser (not a fan of...but not going to fight)...there aren't a ton of those. We're doing slide in gas ranges. Dishwasher has already been purchased as we needed to replace our old one. That's pretty much it.

^avoid samsung and LG
6/2/2016 8:20:26 AM
All of our appliances in our house we bought last year are the Frigidaire Professional series. We've had no real issues in the past year, other than wanting to change out the oven/stove (it's electric & has the glass top).
6/2/2016 10:31:56 AM
I've been doing the same research. Seems like every brand has a decent amount of bad reviews (like 20% of the reviews).LG was recommended to me but they seem to have as bad reviews as everybody
6/2/2016 11:29:04 AM
I've heard to avoid Samsungs in the past (5+ years ago) because electronic fuck-ups and such...but they are easily the highest rated of what I'm looking at on Consumer Reports. Any chance they've fixed their problems?
6/2/2016 3:25:59 PM
consumer reports just tests them for a few days, they dont have to worry about trying to find someone that wants to fix it, if they can even figure out the right part numbers. they dont change model # when they change a part. its crazy

^ We bought an LG dishwasher at our house a year before we moved, and we liked it so much we replaced the dishwasher at the new house with the same LG dishwasher.I read hundreds of reviews, talked to salesmen (I used to work with the guy at lowes so he wasn't bullshitting me), and went through everything consumer reports had to say. We ended up getting an LG washer, dryer, dishwasher, and fridge at the new house. We got a samsung oven. Wife liked the features on the samsung oven better than any of the others in the store and the price was right (only one we didn't research the hell out of).A year later, couldn't be happier with our selections. My advice is first determine your preference (filter or grinder dishwasher, size and style doors on fridge, oven features and burner layout, etc). We eliminated a lot of the super expensive stuff because we knew we wouldn't use some of the features that really drive prices up, and once we determined what we liked it helped narrow down our research. Secondly be aware of what people say in reviews (but take it with a grain of salt, as you noticed nearly everything is 4 stars with a ton of people loving the appliance and the random person bashing it). Third, compare the look and price of the remaining appliances.Or just wait until you are exhausted with the process and just buy whatever is on sale that weekend.

My parents have a French door Samsung with the ice maker in the door, but it's only been about 8 months. So far it's fine though.
6/2/2016 4:54:38 PM
there's some really nice stuff on craigslist for cheap
6/2/2016 5:22:39 PM
thread title has "Best brands" in it and nobody has mentioned Viking, Sub-Zero, etc?
6/2/2016 8:53:02 PM
we bought all samsung appliances with the exception of the range 5 years ago in our old house and had bad experiences with just about everything.the over the range microwave control panel died after 2 years, the dishwasher didn't clean well, and the refrigerator kept having issues where the condensor? would freeze over and i would have to take all the drawers and shelves out to thaw it before it ruined all our food. as a result we decided to avoid the korean appliance brands when we purchased appliances for our new house.we got just about everything for our new house from sears outlets. most of the stuff the outlets sell are scratch and dent, but you can find a lot of floor models that are in perfect condition or have scratches/dents on the back or sides that you would never see once installed. we saved ~$5k by going that route and nothing we purchased had any visible defects once installed. we ended up with a kitchenaid fridge, kitchenaid dishwasher, electrolux induction cooktop, kenmore double ovens, and a GE microwave. the only thing we didn't get from the sears outlet was the range hood.

^^ I'm not that loaded, yo.^^^ Only reason you should be buying appliances off of Craigslist is if you're renting or own a rental property. After looking at all of the large appliance retailers (Lowe's, Home Depot, HH Gregg, Ajmadison, etc.), we went to a local appliance dealer and he's given us better prices than everyone else...with the exception of one or two that we somehow found on Amazon for $100 less.

^^I can't figure out why their shit is so cheap. It doesn't make sense.^ I don't mind buying certain things used, but appliances aren't one of them.
6/3/2016 3:26:03 PM
that doesn't mean it's not a good way for folks who don't mind buying used to get nice stuff at a steep discounti got a fridge that retails over $1k for $200. it was only 2 or 3 years old.
