I was wondering what programs do yall usually use to make an .iso image from a dvd or cd. I would like to use freeware if possible. Also if any of yall make .iso images for your games, how does that work out. Is it a pain to get around the copy protection. I have tried to resist downloading everything but Im sort of tired of fishing around for a cd I havnt used in forever. I might just fire up bittorrent unless yall have a better suggestion. i dun kno about yall but i use stuff like magic ISO and ultra ISO to create them there ISO images. They ain'ts freeware but i like'em like a dog likes biscuts. what do yall think?

for DVDs, use DVD Shrink

For data CDs, I would often use Magic ISO to create the ISO file, and then use Daemon Tools to mount the image into a virtual drive. This works beautifully for someone like me, who regularly references data from a series spanning over 100 discs. I have them all in ISO files, and can access any one of those discs in less than 10 seconds... much better than pulling out the huge spindles and finding the one CD you need to get 1 file off of. We put the files on a network drive here at work, so any of my colleagues can access them any time.

Magic ISO isn't free, and has limits as to how big an ISO file you can make, but imaging an ISO directly from a CD, it doesn't have a limit.

I don't make them very often but when I do I just use Nero to make it. All you have to do is change the recorder from your burner to the Image Recorder and save the file on your hard disk.

Do those programs handle games well or does the copyright protection get in the way. The main purpose of this would be to back up games and other random cds so I dont have to keep up with the.

You'll need CloneCD to backup most games and commercial software, and a cd/dvd drive that can read the discs properly.

If you can do a proper backup, Daemon tools supports emulation for pretty much every protection scheme.

Ha, I just use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to my hard disc. Windows Media Player, Zoom Player, et al. will treat the directory structure like an actual DVD disc = no loss of quality or content. Though the discs can be as much as 9.4 GB. 700+ GB of hard disk space FTW. DVD shrink always swants to either get rid of content or reencode it.

Anyway, he's probably talking about DATA DVDs. For that I use Power ISO. Not free either, but it was basically the first thing I found. I have Nero 7 too but that doesn't work in Windows Vista.

i use DVD Decrypter pretty often. How do you get Windows media player to recognize a directory? I get an error about a missing codec then it tries to charge me for it to get it.

Install the ffdshow decoder and configure it as your MPEG2 decoder to be able to watch the VOB files. ffdshow basically is a universal codec library.

To open a DVD in WMP, go to File -> Open... Then browse for the VIDEO_TS folder and open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.

Thanks for the help. I am still getting an error message though. Now it says:

Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Try decreasing the number of colors displayed on your monitor or decreasing the screen resolution. For additional solutions, click More Information to access the DVD Troubleshooter.

VLC plays .vob files fine but it would be nice to access the whole movie.

you still need an MPEG2 codec.

You can get the Elecard codec free (google it), or buy PowerDVD (I love this damn program)

Ok thanks for the help guys. I finally got it working. I still have a few questions though.

What was the point of the ffdshow decoder if I got the codec from somewhere else?
Is there any advantage to buying powerdvd instead of using wmp?
And while its working there is now 9 small boxes in the top right corner when I play back a dvd. Anyideas on how to get rid of that? (pic in my gallery)

^ The boxes are put there by the MPEG 2 decoder you installed. Uninstall it and install ffdshow. It's free and it doesn't add an overlay. ffdshow also supports PAL format DVDs.

^^^I hate FFDshow, it's such a pain in the ass to deal with. It was cool a few years ago for upscaling DVD's, but it's a damn hassle now.
