Will I get points on my NCDL?I was thinking of going to court in Va to request a PFJ but then my friend told me I didn't need to go and that I should just mail in the court fee and no points would be reported since it's in Va.Any thoughts?

From what I have seen in the past, tickets generally do not follow you from state to state.
4/29/2007 1:25:48 AM
You won't get points. I've gotten 2 tickets in VA and neither one showed up on my NCDL. Keep it mind, if its a real nasty fine maybe, but if its 15-20 over, then you should be fine.Be careful though, b/c some states do report it.
4/29/2007 2:41:55 AM
make sure you pay it.or the next time you stroll through VA it may be your last
4/29/2007 2:44:55 AM
I mean you could save a hundred bucks by avoiding Virginia the rest of your life.
4/29/2007 2:45:59 AM
where in VA did you get it?
4/29/2007 2:55:01 AM
probably around emporia
4/29/2007 8:17:00 AM
I know that on the ticket I got, it said that VA has a reciprocal relationship with NC and the outcome would be reported to "my dmv"
4/29/2007 8:35:05 AM
All the tickets ive gotten in VA have always said that reciprocal crap, but none have ever showed up on my license/record as long as i just mailed in payment.Thats what its all about anyway.

what is the speeding charged. In Virginia on I-95 for example if the speed limit is 65 and you are going 80mph that is reckless driving. Most of the time you can get these tickets dropped really easy. I got a ticket near emporia and paid some lawyer like $200-300 and it was dropped.I also got a reckless driving ticket reduced to simple speeding near Fredericksburg. Also, Virginia has an online driving school and most of the time your lawyer will work out an agreement that you take the 1 hour class online and have the ticket dropped.

I don't think VA does PFJ - my husband tried it and they were like wtf is that. It was more expensive than VA, and it was a pain in the ass when he challenged it. They like to pull the same shit we all try to do in NC ... keep continuing it until dude (there, you - here, the cop) doesn't show up and it defaults to guilty (in NC, n/g).That said, he got a speeding ticket in NC and VA within a ... rather short time ... of each other, and the VA one never hit his NC record, because his PFJ on the NC one wasn't upset.

I got a ticket in VA and showed up for court, the judge apparently really wanted to go play golf that day cuz he dropped everyone's speeding ticket in the court room to improper equipment and we just had to pay a fine
4/29/2007 11:00:13 AM
yeah they love that improper equipment shit up there. just find somewhere in raleigh that can read your speedometer and notarize it and if its off at all (which most cars are), send that shit up there and you'll never hear anything about it.
4/29/2007 11:08:15 AM
I have been told that it depends on the amount of points that you will gain. If its something simple like a speeding ticket, probably not enough points to cross over state lines, which means that it shouldn't go on your insurance. DWI or passing stopped school bus...possibly.All speculation on what little I have heard and experienced with this.

here is a short story of my ticket in virginia....1. got pulled for 74 in a 55 (lucky cause i was definitely going 85+)2. researched that VA does not have PFJ and they do not accept faulty speedometer reports3. i showed up in court on my date hoping the officer wouldn't be there (to my surprise every sheriff in the town was there - small town i guess).4. judge asks if i plead guilty or not guilty - i ask him to review my driving record (clean) and allow me to take a class5. judge agrees to online class - i still had to pay a fine ($250) and take the class6. sent original certificate of online class in with form i received during court date7. somehow my insurance in NC still found out about it and raised my ratesmoral of the story: get a lawyer and make sure your radar detector is on (mine wasn't at the time because it was a sparsely traveled 2-lane highway in central virginia)i learned my lesson
4/30/2007 5:35:04 PM
excellent idea. then you get a ticket for speeding and having a radar detector.
4/30/2007 5:59:13 PM
insurance always finds out about tickets no matter what state you are in.you will only get dl points if you get the ticket in a reciprical state. without looking it up i think virginia, maryland, south carolina, and maybe tennesse are reciprical with nc
4/30/2007 6:18:05 PM
aren't radar detectors illegal in Va? seems like they have a law for every little thing
4/30/2007 6:25:07 PM
^Yup. VSP uses VG2 to catch'em too.
4/30/2007 6:34:06 PM
Va has no PFJ, instead they do traffic school. When I got my ticket, I pled guilty, explained I was an idiot, and asked for leniency. The judge then gave me traffic school. It was $50 or so and 8 hours on a sat, but after I turned in the form they dismissed the ticket entirely.

Peanutbutter an Fuckin Jelly
4/30/2007 8:25:05 PM
yeah if you say PFJ in a Wake County courtroom you'll look like an idiot.and who really cares if these things hit the NCDL driving records anyways (except idiots who drive like maniacs and are near auto-suspension).The real aim should be to prevent them from hitting your insurance...which it sounds like normally requires a lawyer anyway.
4/30/2007 8:33:28 PM
since everyone else shared their VA ticket story...i got a ticket for doing 80 in a 65 in dinwiddie county--which i later find out is the biggest speedtrap in the state. i hired an attorney from richmond who mixed-up my paperwork with someone of the same last name, and subsequently missed my court date. i got a letter from VA DMV saying that my (NC) license had been suspended. eventually, the attorney un-fucked the situation and i ended up having to take an 8 hour class in south boston to get out of it (no internet classes allowed). the moral of the story is: keep it to 10 over in VA
4/30/2007 9:02:59 PM
Emporia is a fucking speedtrap. And they're not even State Troopers, they're the fucking Emporia cops. I got a ticket for 19 over and I had my cruise control set on 75 in a 65. The guy behind me was catching up to me, white car like mine, and I pulled to the side so I guess the cop figured since I was acting guilty that I was guilty. So I just pay the fine? No points on license?*What would it do to my insurance if I just pay this? My fee is $186 so I may just get a lawyer for an extra $100 or so to keep it off my insurance.[Edited on May 10, 2007 at 4:26 PM. Reason : insurance]

so pretty much virginia sucks
5/10/2007 5:50:48 PM
north carolina has reciprocity with all states for speeding ticketsit will get here eventuallyhire a lawyer to take care of it
5/10/2007 6:11:15 PM
read the NCSU legal services link above. It will basically tell you to get a lawyer unless you want to get 2-3 points for 15 over, even out of state.

I lived in MO for 1 year after college. I got two speeding tickets in 3 months and the MO DMV sent me a letter sayin gthat if I got one more, they'd suspend my license. I moved to NC and none of that shit went with me
5/12/2007 4:02:47 PM
bump
3/3/2008 6:46:51 PM
thanks for the bump cass. i'll report the latest on my ticket drama in VA:i got a 75 in a 55 friday night in fairfax, va. would be reckless if i were a VA resident. listen to what people tell you about speeding in VA, ESPECIALLY northern VA. you will get fucked by these cops.here's the deal: don't do a lawyer if it's just a speeding violation. take the "i drive safely" course and keep the VA dmv and the district court clerk in the loop. they basically credit you up to 5 points so you won't have any points on your record. you won't have to show up to court, but you will have to pay the price of the ticket most likely (in my case, $100) and the cost of the course ($50). you will still have a record with the dmv, but it wont be on the report that is checked by the insurance companies, so your premium will not increase.lawyers were trying to charge me from $800-1500 to fight this, which would have been the dumbest move ever. ironic that admitting guilt and skipping court by paying the fine (in combination with the class) is the best way to deal with this one.
3/4/2008 12:07:57 AM
either the lawyers were trying to take you behind the shed or DC lawyers are a shit ton more expensive. My lawyer from Emporia was like $200
