we made 12 but i'm wondering how washington and philly are above ushttp://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=113586sure to be dropping soon as every single team in the area got worse. 08 should be better than ever though.
4/26/2007 4:20:19 AM
cool.....?
4/26/2007 4:25:32 AM
you're wondering why philadelphia is a better sports city than raleigh-durham?maybe because they have a franchise for each of the four major sportsand the big fiveand bill cosbystop making so many damn threads
4/26/2007 5:32:23 AM
ya but bill cosby wasn't good in 06. only villanova and maybe the eagles.
4/26/2007 5:36:42 AM
Gainesville is 32nd? Maybe a few more national titles in the 2 most important college sports and they break the top 30
4/26/2007 10:48:06 AM
you're a moron
4/26/2007 10:50:19 AM
Miami is #2?
4/26/2007 10:50:44 AM
lets move Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill up to 12th! you know, after duke had a down year, all 3 football programs sucked...the former stanley cup winners missed the playoffs...etc...wtf does RDU deserve to go UP for?
4/26/2007 10:51:50 AM
4/26/2007 10:55:38 AM
because it's [old]August 1, 2006They had to put any of the places that won in the major sports higher than they were the previous year.ChicagoMiamiPittsburghDetroit[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Reason : Actually, I have no idea why but they moved pittsburgh lower]
4/26/2007 10:57:25 AM
Charlotte at #26 Take that you fancy, metrosexual bastards....
4/26/2007 10:58:00 AM
^NBA, NFL, AAA baseball, and NCAA bball
4/26/2007 11:01:25 AM
^^Charlotte is a great sports city. The Panthers and the Knights get support on a regular basis. The Bobcats, whether good or not (yet), have a wonderful new arena downtown. It's a great place to go see a game no matter which team.
4/26/2007 11:13:18 AM
if you're wondering about philly...
4/26/2007 11:15:19 AM
4/26/2007 11:17:31 AM
The only reason Charlotte isn't higher is because the Bobcats and Panthers generally sucked this year.Between those two franchises, the Knights, the Checkers, UNC-C, etc. it's a pretty good sports town.I'm a little bit surprised they still let them group the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area together. If you keep them together, then RDU will always be top 20 just because the 3 of the Big 4 in college bball.
4/26/2007 11:32:01 AM
this list is stupidraleigh-durham is way way way too high
4/26/2007 11:37:32 AM
Well if you take the Panthers away from Charlotte (love em), it lacks quality bigtime. Who cares about AAA baseball, UNCC is a joke (conference hello?), and fuck the bobcats for many, many reasons that I wont get into. You could argue on behalf of charlotte with NASCAR, btu we all see where the NASCAR ratings are going. Im not surprised they didnt include it in the ratings else theyd have to include WWE and UFC fanmanship as well And yes if you split up Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill then each by itself has rough time of it. Once NCSU gets into the bigtime college bball mix again with Sid then this area will erupt. Too bad Duke cant get their act together with football, I guess those snobs are too stuffy to enjoy tailgating...
4/26/2007 11:42:28 AM
The list shouldn't have anything to do with team success. Miami being anywhere near the Top 10 is a fucking disgrace. The top sports cities in the country are inarguable and interchangable. They are New York City, Chicago, and Boston.V The Marlins average like 8,000 a game and the Heat games are like the Dodgers. Late arriving and early leaving. Miami is not a top sports town. I think of sports towns as those who actually support their teams and they are almost religious (i.e.- the Cubs or the Yankees).[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 12:09 PM. Reason : st louis fans blow.. fuck them.]
4/26/2007 12:04:08 PM
^Miami got on the list b/c of the Heat's recent success and the Marlins are actually (and very deceptively) one of the most "profitable" teams in baseball. Not to say they have outrageous support but we're talking profit. Also, you have NHL (panthers) and the Miami Hurrithugs and the Dolphins.^^I forgot to mention NASCAR in Charlotte but yeah, that's its Thunder.[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 12:07 PM. Reason : not to say I agree][Edited on April 26, 2007 at 12:08 PM. Reason : .]
4/26/2007 12:07:08 PM
^^ I would ass St. Louis for baseball alone[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 12:07 PM. Reason : d]
4/26/2007 12:07:44 PM
^^^agree; i lived in miami for 2 years, and it is probably the worst big city sports town in the country. No support for the Canes, they only sell out about 1 game a year, no support for the Heat until shaq came, and even then the arena still has black out drapes over 1/2 the upper deck. The marlins are just embarrassing, and so are the panthers. They have the orange bowl, and the super bowl once a decade, that is about the only redeeming factor for that city![Edited on April 26, 2007 at 12:10 PM. Reason : .]

4/26/2007 12:59:51 PM
NASCAR ratings are down 14% from this time last year. Don't worry though, NASCAR is working on a good story line for the next few shows
4/26/2007 1:07:53 PM
^^FYI on the NASCAR; sorry if you're a fan btwhttp://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/nascar/2007-04-19-tv-ratings_N.htm\^beat me to it. I wonder what kinda story line? DDP takes out Sting with a tire iron before the show ends? Then Rusty Wallace returns just in time to save Jeff Gordon from getting a three count put on him by Tony Stewart? Boy howdy got damn.... [Edited on April 26, 2007 at 1:10 PM. Reason : ^]
4/26/2007 1:08:03 PM
oh ok...and im not really a fan, but over the last 10 years or so the sport has gotten pretty big
4/26/2007 1:08:44 PM
^^lol Then Juan Pablo Montoya comes out in his Lucha Libre mask and hits smoke with a chair. Subsequently, NASCAR officials rule that Montoya speeded on his way to the ring, and then they call a debris caution and declare Gordon the winner
4/26/2007 1:13:31 PM
4/26/2007 1:21:58 PM
^well I'd be embarrassed about firing the NL MoY, but yeah 2 world series is pretty cool
4/26/2007 1:26:18 PM
embarassed about that particular move, sure. i mean, for comparison's sake, i was a little embarassed about state gettin rid of sendek only like 2 years removed from his ACC CoY, even though i felt it was the right move. that doesnt make ncsu an embarassment though.
4/26/2007 1:36:22 PM
i'm not embarassed of the panthers
4/26/2007 1:40:49 PM
^it's been 10 years since the panthers won a playoff game, and the Luongo trade was just sad[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 1:53 PM. Reason : I'd be embarrassed]
4/26/2007 1:52:58 PM
oh shit the florida panthers, nm
4/26/2007 1:54:33 PM
Here come all the Charlotte haters out of the woodwork, as usualThe Panthers have gotten fantastic support over the years, despite Charlotte being the test (and first) NFL market to use a derivative of the PSL System, which systematically gouges fans even more than they are used to - they always sell out all regular season and preseason games, what else do you want? The Panthers have been to 3 NFC title games and a super bowl in their first 11 years; i don't really see why anyone should be embarrassed about thatThe Bobcats are doing just fine, considering the anti-pro-roundball angst that the Hornets fostered and left behind for the new guys to deal with... the new arena downtown was built using taxpayer money directly after the city collectively voted that down in referendum, a lot of people, including my folks are still enraged about that and the raised property taxes that came with it - it'll take a little more time - the team right now is constantly improving, and will have a real shot at the playoffs next year, the downtown arena is gorgeousoh yeah, and NASCAR brings three bigtime race weekends per year, including the allstar race, into the city... not to mention the NASCAR Hall of Fame being built there as wellI love Raleigh and I love NC State, but it sounds like there's a lot of inferiority complex up in hereand i hope you're talking about the Florida Panthers
4/26/2007 2:03:03 PM
My guess is that the Triangle has more of a national reputation for being a sports 'town' than Charlotte does. Charlotte is the place where NASCAR is centered to most people, which is a big thing but IMO still pales in comparison to 'Tobacco Road.'With the Canes championship, the constant shoving down the throat of Duke-UNC, and of course NC State right down the road, I imagine that overshadows the Panthers and the Bobcats.
4/26/2007 2:05:37 PM
yeah they were talking about the florida panthers, i misinterpreted him at firsti dont think RDU has an inferiority complex, i just think since college basketball is king in RDU, they act like NBA/NFL/NASCAR/UNCC/ECHL/IL is nothing which is obviously wrong
4/26/2007 2:07:25 PM
^^I agree with that, which is why RDU is rated 12th and charlotte is 25th. Nothing inferior about being ranked 13 spots higher.OT: I am probably moving to #45 next year [Edited on April 26, 2007 at 2:13 PM. Reason : btw this article was written like 9 months ago]
4/26/2007 2:11:02 PM
haha, Charlotte pluggers taking the bait! I love it! Charlotte is overall a great spot and I totally respect and love the panthers. But I cant help poking fun at that place to ppl who think its soo much better than anywhere else in NC. If ya cant take a little criticism of your artsy-fartsy metrosexual downtown yuppies who like to pretend that the city isnt really full of NASCAR/Wrastling loving necks and that the bobcats are a respectable enough franchise to replace the Hornets, then I will continue to get a kick outtof it ! [Edited on April 26, 2007 at 2:18 PM. Reason : \/ Born in Gboro and yeah it still sucks. Ive lived in Raleigh for 7 yrs thx]
4/26/2007 2:12:10 PM
4/26/2007 2:15:51 PM
yeah, the florida panthers are one of those teams that a lot of people forget existstruth is, not many people outside of NHL cities (and not a huge number of people within) below the mason-dixon line give a damn about hockey at any level... this question is relative, obviously, but imo the Canes title will hold less water when asking most people their opinion on the subjectCharlotte has teams in two out of the three major sports leagues in this country, Raleigh (Durham and Chapel Hill) have zero. Seems to me that would put the Queen City above RDU, but I suppose the Duke-Carolina trump card holds plenty of weight, and it also shows how far collegiate sports have progressed in importance on the national sports scene, and how much professional sports (read: NBA and MLB) have soured in the minds of many
4/26/2007 2:16:21 PM
btw BeerznBikes, you know who the NASCAR/Wrastling fans are in Charlotte? people that moved to Charlotte from Concord, Huntersville, etc etc etc...you know who the metrosexual downtown yuppies are? people who moved to charlotte to work at a bank...you know who the non-metrosexual non-nascar fans are like myself? people who actually were born and raised in charlotte
4/26/2007 2:20:52 PM
Why did they stop at 99?!? You know city #100 is PISSED.
4/26/2007 2:21:23 PM
4/26/2007 2:29:07 PM
^are you sighing because speeding is not a "judgement call?" It might as well be, since they don't release the speeds
4/26/2007 2:42:58 PM
i believe he's sighing at the use of 'speeded'not unlike how i'm sighing at your British spelling of 'judgement' i kid, i kid
4/26/2007 3:06:46 PM
lol well, msnbc uses the word speeded ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17368851/ in the title)and so does foxnews ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,229144,00.html )and so do dictionaries [Edited on April 26, 2007 at 3:17 PM. Reason : d]
4/26/2007 3:16:35 PM
well hey, i stand corrected
4/26/2007 3:19:43 PM
You could be right, he could be sighing at that anyway. And you're right about judgment being preferred in the states.
4/26/2007 3:22:10 PM
I didn't read the whole thread, but i agree with the third post, you're a tard if you think RDU is a better sports town than phila
4/26/2007 6:25:47 PM
I'm still trying to figure who in philly was good in 06 other than nova. i mean the eagles were ok but the city had no great teams last year. quality over quanity[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 9:57 PM. Reason : or else we'd simply be listing the largest us cities ]
