i'm probably going to look for a summer job at a place like this just to help with rent and stuff. was wondering what current employees thought of each place and trying to get a rough idea of starting pay at each.also, what type of discounts do you get? thanks.

I just had an interview at Circuit City for a warehouse position. The starting wage was a bit low. $8.25.
4/24/2007 4:23:27 PM
How much would you expect for unskilled labor?
4/24/2007 4:41:52 PM
Best buy and Circuit city only hire people who have skillsstocking skills, checkout skills, box opening skills, laughing at 40 year olds playing the Guitar Hero 2 Demo skills

^^^ UPS pays better than that...not that i'm endorsing them[Edited on April 24, 2007 at 4:54 PM. Reason : ...]

My husband and I have both worked for Best Buy. He loves it. . .I didn't like the job so much, but loved the people. And as far as Circuit City, uh. . .a lot of our fired employees go across the street to work for them, so take what you want from that.

i remember applying at CC in high school. they made me take some 2 hour long test or something just for a cashier position.
4/24/2007 6:33:03 PM
yeah i mean i'm not expecting great pay. was hoping to get some part time work where i co-opped and got $18/hour but they don't need anyone right now. just looking for something to help pay rent and whatnot.

you've got some time still, keep looking for an internship or something more worthwhile for your summer. summers are super-valuable especially if you're in your last two years of school.
4/24/2007 7:54:35 PM
SAS is hiring for like two million summer interns. Apply for at least one of them.
4/24/2007 7:59:14 PM
How do you know that?

David you should know better than to question GodHe already let you win that fight with the fucking slingshotDon't push your luck

Who is slingshot?
4/24/2007 8:33:09 PM
i think SAS figures out who they get for summer internships back in february. my dad's cousin-in-law is the vice president of HR there i think and they were asking me about it way back then.i'm just looking for something part-time though b/c i'm taking summer classes. i'm only looking to put in around 20 hours or so a week.but yeah, i'd definietly be up for something better than a crappy retailer job if i can find it.

RE: The Best Buy rejects working at Circuit City.We talked to an older man working at Circuit City who had worked in retail pretty much all his life (poor bastard) and he said he went to Circuit City after quitting Best Buy because they don't treat their employees quite as shitty as Best Buy did when he was there.*shrug*
4/24/2007 9:42:51 PM
When I applied at CC ages ago they had some shitty test that took hours (and had hardly anything to do with the job) and I was trying to be a cashier or stocker for like 8 bucks an hr.
4/24/2007 11:02:54 PM
I applied to Best Buy in high school and they had me take a pre-employment quiz over the phone. And it rejected me. So I said "fuck that, I'll never work there"I have friends who have worked there for years and love it though
4/26/2007 2:07:06 AM
lol you failed a best buy quiz over the phone?
4/26/2007 3:00:54 AM
I worked at gamestop (same as eb) and it made me feel like a salesman, always trying to push magazine subscriptions and membership cards, or getting people to preorder games for no reason.
4/26/2007 3:36:31 AM
i think a lot of places are like that.i talked to a friend that works at eb, he said that they'd probably only pay me like $6.15.fuck that, i made more than that in high school at chick-fil-a.
4/26/2007 9:02:03 AM
I worked at best buy for all of four months before I quit out of frustration. They dont pay commission, but if you cant convince the customer to buy the obviously retarded service plan and $200 worth of obviously useless accessories with each TV, they cut your hours. You just have to hope your customers are complete idiots, assuming youre ok with taking advantage of their idiocy.
4/26/2007 9:46:34 AM
never worked any of the places, but I've heard horror stories about best buy.
4/26/2007 9:51:22 AM
^^you are a really shitty salesman then.
4/26/2007 10:04:39 AM
I wish I got the Best Buy discount.

Guess what Circuit City just learned? After canning their most experienced and useful employees, Circuit City discovers that their stock falls to a 52 week low when sales drop through the floor. Didn't have to be a genius to predict this. Circuit City Pulls Outlook, Stock Sinkshttp://tinyurl.com/yq8sxd

^ haha i read about that. hilarious. good job guys!
5/2/2007 9:35:20 AM
yeah the owner checked the stock and was like "ah fuck, just what i needed"
5/2/2007 10:47:31 AM
haha pwnt

I've never worked at any of those places, but I have to imagine Best Buy sucks. It's got the highest employee to customer ratio of any store I've ever been in, and yet NO ONE EVER HELPS A CUSTOMER!I can't tell you how many times I or some of my friends have been into a Best Buy and no one could help and no service was offered.Once I walked in about 20 minutes before they were going to close and walked up to a washer and dryer set and said, "I want this one. I don't need to look at anything else, I want to buy this right now." I wasn't particularly picky, I just needed a washer/dryer set immediately. I was ready to drop 800 bucks on a set right there, and they refused to help. That is some stupid stuff. I wasn't going to make a fuss and ask all sorts of questions and peruse the selection, I was ready to buy. Any company that has such poor customer service as that doesn't get my business.
