I have heard that Java is kind of pointless for a CE major so I am trying to find something else. There is a 10 week C++ class over the summer that is distance ed. which I am thinking about taking. I don't have much CSC experience, but this shouldn't be too fast since it is 10 weeks. I have never had a DE class so I don't know how hard it would be to get help if I had a problem. Anybody tried taking this online and if so was it bad?

If you have a reasonable grasp of Java and OOP, I would recommend taking C over C++.Of course, I'm an EE, so take that with a large grain of salt.

def take the C++.theres like a bazillion tutorials and references and forums on the web if you need extra help beyond whats available in DE.

If Marty Dulberg is still doing it online, i'd def take it with him. he's the man.

Yeah, it's Dulberg's section. I am gonna give it a shot. I am already taking DiffEQ SummerI and Solids SummerII, but since it is a 10 week I should be able to handle it. If anybody thinks this is too crazy please speak up.

eh, i'm taking three 10-week ECE classes, so i'd say you're in good shape

i'm taking that C++ 10 week class over the summer too, i've heard it's really easy.

I hope so, it is just a 100 level course so how bad can it be? Seems like the ability to think logically should get us through this course okay.

Remember when they pulled the C++ courses (fall 2002). You could take FORTRAN or Java. Something about antiquated and C# blah blah. I actually enjoyed C++ in high school. It's actually pretty intuitive and gives you a good feel for how computer programs work (on a very simple level).

i was going to take java, but i hate java. it's a hell of a lot slower than C. i don't care about portability.

java is easier but C is faster and more flexible. i like C better.

Not wanting to dissuade Evan from taking my class over the summer but I don't know that I would characterize the class as being easy. Some people take to programming quickly, others have a hard time getting it so your individual mileage may vary. You can expect to put in something like 12 -20 hours of effort per week over the summer session to successfully complete all of the cork in the class (viewing lectures, reading, doing assignments). Feel free to contact me directly if you have any concerns or questions before you sign up.Martin Dulberg, marty_dulberg@ncsu.edu
