it will be interesting to see how good he is, with having people taht will block for him..hmm we need to put some pressure on Delhomme, b/c he sucked ass last year!! By Mike Cranston, The Associated PressA month after he was released by the Houston Texans, David Carr agreed Friday to a two-year deal to play for the Carolina Panthers.Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will serve as Jake Delhomme's backup."It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us."Carr was a five-year starter for the expansion Texans. He completed 60% of his passes, but threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times. Carr completed a career-high 68.3% of his passes last season, but was released by the Texans after they obtained Matt Schaub in a trade from Atlanta and anointed him as their starting quarterback. The Panthers believe Carr's troubles stemmed from Houston's poor offensive line, and tried to sign him during his visit with the team early in the week. Carr left without a contract and visited Seattle, while Carolina brought in former Miami quarterback Joey Harrington for a visit.FIND MORE STORIES IN: NFL | Panthers | Texans | David Carr | Jake Delhomme | Marty Hurney | Chris Weinke | Matt SchaubBut on Thursday Carr decided he wanted to sign with Carolina, and the two sides reached a deal over the phone early Friday morning, ending a nervous period for Hurney."He met everybody and met Jake and I think he felt comfortable," Hurney said. "You never know what happens when he leaves without a contract. But we felt good about him I think he felt good about us and he made the decision to come here."The Panthers were looking for an experienced quarterback to back up Delhomme after releasing Chris Weinke last month. Weinke struggled in a relief role in three games last season when Delhomme had a sprained thumb, throwing two touchdown passes and four interceptions. The Panthers went 1-2 in those three games and the lone game they won came with Weinke throwing only seven passes. The 6-foot-3 Carr may have had other opportunities to start with other teams, but Hurney insisted Carr will back up Delhomme, who struggled last season as the Panthers finished disappointing 8-8."We made it clear and he knows that Jake Delhomme is our starting quarterback," Hurney said. "I think it was important for him to come to a winning organization and a place where he thinks has a chance to win. He knows that Jake is our starter. Every player wants to play, but he knows the role he's coming into."The move means the Panthers now have the top two picks from the 2002 draft. Carolina selected defensive end Julius Peppers with No. 2 pick.Carr's signing is the biggest move the Panthers have made so far in free agency. Hurney has said they were content with 21 of 22 starters returning next season.

4/7/2007 6:04:31 PM
haha, because the QB is the only player on the field[Edited on April 7, 2007 at 6:06 PM. Reason : actually in the case of the texans, it's nearly true.][Edited on April 7, 2007 at 6:09 PM. Reason : i guess delhomme, trent dilfer, brad johnson were better than manning up until this past year]
4/7/2007 6:05:37 PM
carr is better than delhomme because...?
4/7/2007 6:11:38 PM
Brad Johnson would have been SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Delholme and Carr together

Go 2k7 Panthers' QB Carr!Seattle keeps getting shat on by free agent players... no one wants to go to a cold miserable constantly raining city.
4/8/2007 4:36:20 PM
I seriously hope Carr isn't the starter by week 8. If this proves true, it means the panthers are having a shitty season. The same merits that fans give Carr a pass on(bad oline play and lack of a consistent running game) they refuse to admit jake's 06 season was hampered by the same pitfalls. HYPOCRITS. The backup QB is always the most popular player on the team among weak minded fans.

^Good Obserrvation... III
4/9/2007 2:26:10 PM
shit, I hope he's the starter as of the 2nd half of the first game, th esame way jake came in.
4/9/2007 2:29:16 PM
well first off phuck all you jake haters. You all were ridin' it at the beginning of last season...second... Carr is the same type of QB as Jake!third... theres no way we pull Jake the first game of the season. We knew Peete's legs couldnt take no more at the beginning of that season anyways...

^bingo, but he can't do that now, so well see.....
4/9/2007 2:44:51 PM
let me make a few quick points cause i'm about to move on1. i like the idea of getting carr; he is certainly better than weinke2. jake is not perfectthat said, how come carr not having an offensive line is an excuse for him to throw more career INTs than TDs...but jake not having a running game isnt an excuse for him to consistently be in the playoff hunt, year after year?also anyone who says jake has just been getting bailed out by smitty...you guys ever heard of andre johnson? being in this area, id imagine most people see more panthers games than texans games...we know more about jakes flaws from seeing them...but how do you give carr a free pass for "not having an o-line" but you cant get jake a free pass for not having a running gameand as a matter of fact, we havent had a great o-line since the 2003 seasondelhomme is not peyton...criticism is warranted...but at least be realistic about it
4/9/2007 2:47:58 PM
Sign Carr and you wanna talk about PLAYOFFS?!? PLAYOFFS!!!!????!!! Carr has no postseason experience and say all you want about Jake forcing passes (which he does and all QBs do), he is clutch as hell in the postseason on that last drive to win the game....Carr has no experience winning, who knows what he will do and you want to crown him before he ever puts on the uniform? How bout a little appreciation for the Cajun that did a large part to take a pitiful offense to the superbowl and nfc title game?
4/9/2007 2:50:37 PM
4/9/2007 3:14:47 PM
hmmm... Do you remember Delhomme throwing two interceptions in the last minute of two games this year where all we had to do was punch it in to win or tie? I guess he's only clutch in the playoffs, not the regular season though. I don't remember ever seeing David Carr throwing away his teams guaranteed overtime with less than 30 seconds left in the game in his entire career
4/9/2007 3:15:02 PM
^usually because he was sacked on 4th down....
4/9/2007 3:17:09 PM
4/9/2007 3:40:04 PM
what are you talking about? He threw interceptions, he was not sacked on fourth down in either of those games at the end. Not only that but I remember one specific game i cant remember who it was against... maybe cincinatti? that we only needed a field goal to tie. we could've just sat on the ball instead of throwing a pick to lose the game. Just because Delhomme was a good qb 3 years ago shouldn't make him undisputed starter this year if there's decent competition. Delhomme is Kurt Warner all over again without an actual Super Bowl ring
4/9/2007 3:43:43 PM
so what's the consensus on what it'll take for Jake to be benched?IMO, nothing short of injury will lose it for him in the preseason.....2-3 losses in a row where he throws 2+ ints each game and he'll be benched. My prediction is that Jake will get hurt midway through the season.....Carr will come in and do a good job, Jake will play a game or 2 when he heals (unless it's a season ender, b/c all coaches say you never lose your job b/c of injury), and Carr will come back afterwards b/c of lack of production.
4/9/2007 3:46:24 PM
I'm calling it now... David Carr soon to replace Jake Delhomme paralleling the Marc Bulger replacement of Kurt Warner within 2 years
4/9/2007 3:50:07 PM
4/9/2007 5:21:11 PM
doesn't that just reinforce the terrible offensive line argument?I'd rather have a qb who fucked up in the clutch because of the line than one who just plain fucks up, throwing a pick FTL on third down when on fourth you can tie it with a field goal.
4/9/2007 8:48:31 PM
im actually kind of excited about Carr being herei bet he takes Jakes job during the preseason games

we take a chance and throw the ball, we should've run it or settled on the field goalwe stay conservative and run the ball to be safe, we're too conservative
