Do you want to replace it with another laptop, or go for a desktop this time?

If you want a portable device, are you thinking a REAL portable laptop or a laptop that's more of a stowable/portable desktop but that you don't really plan on carrying around with you?

Would you consider a tablet?

How much are you looking to spend?

What do you think about macs possibly?

If you answer these we could probably give you some meaningful advice. Otherwise it's just shots in the dark.

Macs aren't THAT much more than comparable PC laptops, the thing is apple doesn't make the ultra-low end celeron M machines that it sounds like you might end up getting. Generally, sub $1000 laptops that aren't just cheap because of extremely good discounts are pretty shitty.

It's really amazing the jump in quality (materials, weight, screen, battery life) you get going from a 600 dollar laptop to a 900-1000 dollar laptop. That being said, if you can't spend that much I would suggest getting a dell with a coupon code off of slickdeals or something. That's if your dead-set on getting a laptop in that price range.

If laptop/desktop doesn't matter, then I'd reccomend a Dell desktop of some sort. Anything with a Core 2 or Core 2 duo will probably be fine for you. If you don't care about gaming, then you don't need to worry about the video card.

If you can afford a few hundred more, I strongly suggest the thinkpads sold through the bookstore. They'll be announcing new models in mid to late april and those will be roughly 20-40% off retail when we first get them in. They'll run between 1000 and 2100 and come with a minimum of a 3 year warranty and the option to get loaners at the bookstore if they need to be repaired.

uhhh sure. if you define a dual-core 1.73ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVD Burner system as a POS then yeah, you're right.

As long as it's cheap and comes with super spell check you'll be golden.
