Is this a young cottonmouth? Found it walking my pup along the sound. He (or she) was sunning on the sand. It was semi-aggressive, as it curled up and struck appx 3 times, but only when I tried to move it (don't worry, I used a stick and moved it far from where any kids could run across it).ETA: It was appx 6-8 inches long. Very young snake.[Edited on March 31, 2007 at 1:38 PM. Reason : add]

diamnond back rattler or baby cobra.
3/31/2007 1:32:27 PM
Not a cottonmouth. The head is the wrong shape. Poisonous snakes have big triangular heads.
3/31/2007 1:36:37 PM
no I wasn't able to see its mouth...it was too fast.Hmmm banded water snake...well, this is a pic I found of a juvi banded water snake in NC. I don't really think they look too alike. This one has too much red on it.[Edited on March 31, 2007 at 1:41 PM. Reason : pic]

it's a NC Long Black Trouser
3/31/2007 1:58:25 PM
thanks for being a responsible person and moving the snake out of harm's way instead of just killing it and then posting on TWW afterwardsout of curiosity, where on the coast did you find it?
3/31/2007 2:11:25 PM
oh I love snakes...I'd never kill one on purpose!I live on the Outer Banks (Dare County). This little guy was sunning himself on the sand between the sound and the brush. Cute lil' guy
3/31/2007 2:37:33 PM
good idea to move em with sticks even though you might not be afraid of their bite. IMO, water snakes have some of the worst smelling musk of the snakes native to NC. happy to see you saved it, most people see pattern on a snake and automatically think it's a copperhead, which leads them to feel the need to kill it.

pretty snake!!!and again, good for you for not stomping it to death like alot of ignorant people!!!!i really hate that shit.
4/2/2007 12:16:27 AM
^try working at a pet store and putting up with the hordes of people who say shit like "the only good snake is a dead snake," or "any time i see a snake i go out of my way to kill it."<waiting for the inevitable response of above quotes>

4/2/2007 12:47:43 AM

4/2/2007 1:20:48 AM
give it time. but yes, it does mean something, and when you figure it out, it'll probably blow your mind. the "-" is only there because spaces in screennames werent allowed.[Edited on April 2, 2007 at 1:26 AM. Reason : shortcut->justfuckinggoogleit.com]

copperheadtotally
4/2/2007 1:55:20 AM
I almost stepped directly on a copperhead the other day while he was sunning on a clump of grassI had boots on, so I did step on him though once I realized what he wasI thought it may have been a juvenile rat snake or something at first which I usually let go depending on where I am at
4/2/2007 3:24:28 AM
i would have so tortured that thing before i killed it
4/2/2007 3:28:29 AM
haha nahmaybe when I was 13I'm just not into torturing a creature, even if it's a dangerous one... if it needs to go then I'll just go ahead and do ithe took a boot and then a swift blow to the head with a 24" razor sharp machete[Edited on April 2, 2007 at 3:36 AM. Reason : ..]

I agree with the banded water snake. We found them all over our yard, so collected a few and took them to a nature place, and they ID'd them for us.

the snake is named Donald R. DeCiccohe attended Hobart Collegeoriginally from france

It was a pretty smart idea to try and use a stick to move a snake in stasis. You sure you couldn't of just stood over the thing and pissed on it?Sometimes when I'm in the foreign terrain, and I see something I don't know, first thing I do is prod the mother FOR EVERYONES SAFETY.
4/2/2007 11:11:14 PM
so whats your point, firm butt genitals?
4/3/2007 1:37:38 AM
I would have skinned that little fatty, seasoned him with some cajun spice, and tossed him on the grill.Or let him go.Either way.
