I am going to attempt to replace a leaking front crank seal on a '96 volvo 850, 2.4 non turbo. Anybody done this before? It looks like once the harmonic balancer is off the seal should be right there, but in the kit I ordered I got a bunch of gaskets and o-rings for the oil pump and shit. Is this going to be a pain in the ass?

Has that thing got a timing belt or what?

Yeah, I think so.

short answer - yes (and yes it's an interference timing belt design)long answers, search here: http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/?model=850 and http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/ and more specifically here's how to take apart that side of the engine: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8803

Whoa. Thanks for the info. I am really glad I didn't start tearing that apart before seeing that stuff.

front crank seal is 10x easier than rear main on the 850.

i would go ahead and drop some money and do it right, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, crank and cam seals, and valve cover gasket, and you'll be good for another 75k miles or so
