before it gets locked, i'll say MGM. I've stayed at MGM, Paris, and Aladdin so far during my trips out there. MGM has a good casino with Monte Carlo just a short block away (MC has a lot of low limit tables - even on New Years eve we have been able to find $10 blackjack). But I don't the the MC has much for nightlife, which MGM does. It isn't cheap, but it isn't expensive either. Monte Carlo, New York, New York, Excalibur, Luxor all within a short walk, and the monorail stops on the backside to get up to other parts of the strip.

stayed at luxor and excalibur. both pretty nice and right amidst everything. The new place there is the Wynn which is supposed to be amazing. Search for the old threads there is a big discussion.

we're going to lv for 4 nights after the gf's graduation in may. staying right on the strip

we'll be doing all the tourist stuff but spending some time on the casino floor. what casinos are the best, who has the best drink service, and who has low-limit blackjack (i don't really want to blow through $25/hand if i start cold)? we were going to go up to fremont st for an afternoon/early evening to see the old part of vegas, is it worth it? anything else ya'll suggest would be great.

I'll be there over Memorial day as well. I know I'm stayin at the Excalibur Sat night since I scored it for 20 bucks, haven't figured out the Sun night yet. Flying out early on Tue so we'll just stay up through Monday night. I signed up at Lasvegasadvisor.com and it looks like they have many great coupons in their Pocketbook of Values.

if you are going for cheap and ON the strip do harrah's. i found 55 dollars a night. the only thing that costs is the flight.

I've only been once - last summer- and we stayed at the Luxor. It was awesome - it had a nice casino, great drink service, and was very close to New York, New York, Excalibur, and MGM. Like I said, I've only been once.

We did go to Old Vegas and it was great - especially Freemont St. at night.

We gambled at Harrah's, Luxor, New York New York, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, and some others that I can't remember.

Liek ^ said...it depends on how much money you want to spend. There is a big difference between Harrah's and Bellagio. We were originally going to stay at Bellagio but with 6 people for 6 nights it was going to be an extra couple thousand dollars.

you should definately go at night...the fremont street experience with lights and the screen overhead is ridiculous and possibly the most awesome thing I've ever seen.

I stayed at the Venetian. It was nice, but I think a little overpriced. Another couple we went with stayed at the Wynn. When I go back, that's where I’ll stay. Really nice, brand new and topless pool.

to anyone who gambled, where were some low limit blackjack tables and loose slots? from what i've heard the best place to start out is off the strip.

also, is there anyway to get cheaper tickets to shows?

^ there are several stands/outfits on teh strip where you can get 1/2 price tickets to same day shows.

i just went to vegas 2 weeks ago and stayed at the luxor. its a nice hotel, with reasonable rates (for vegas)....i think it was about $240 a night for friday and saturday. its on the southern part of the strip, with really only mandalay bay on the southern side.....everything else is north. you can easily walk up there, but you're not in the "heart" of the strip.

if i had to do it all over again, i would have dished out a little more money and stayed at ceasar's palace. that was by far my favorite place that we went to. its enormous and extravagent and completely over-the-top. tons of stuff going on....and its more adult oriented (lots of half naked chicks dancing all over the place). the luxor was a little more tame because it had some kid oriented attractions (IMAX, mummy museum, etc). the Venetian and Ballagio were also very nice...and the Mirrage was hopping and fun.

we couldnt find any blackjack at the bigger name casinos on thes strip for less than $10 on friday and saturday nights...during the day some of them go down to $5, but dont count on finding them all over the place. tropicana has $5 blackjack all the time (according to the sign outside it) and ive heard that casino royale has cheaper stuff on the strip. pretty much all casinos have slots that go down to 1 or 2 cents. when we needed drinks, we just sat down at one of those and played for a while until we drank 3-4 drinks.

the "heart" of the strip is really venecian/ceasar's/bellagio. the flamingo is really close to those, and pretty cheap (but you get what you pay for; especially in this city). if all you care about is location, stay there. the Wynn is much too pretentious for my taste -- but if that's what you go for, stay there. it's on the strip technically, but it's basically at the end of it.

head down to fremont if you want low-limit gambling.

for a really loose poker game, the MGM Grand and the Rio are good. you'll get a lot of blue-collar locals playing at Excalibur.

Monte Carlo usually has a good bit of $5 tables until the early evening, and even some until midnight. If you're sitting before the table limit is raised, you get grandfathered in on the old limit (at least for a while)

drink service will be fairly quick at the tables...extremely slow at slots. and whatever you do, don't be that guy playing nickel slots asking the blackjack waitress for drinks...they'll tell you to shove off

seriously.... where you start out doesn't matter much i was in my room probably a total of 20 hours the week i was there. and ALL of that was sleeping or changing cloths.

and by mid week another place gave us a free room.

Downtown. Don't worry about how fancy your room is, you won't be spending much time there. For card games (poker, blackjack, etc.), downtown is the best place to be, and you don't need a car (or to hike a mile) to get from place to place. Plus the rooms will be cheaper.

mirage or mgm, if you want cheap, then stay a few blocks off the strip, stay away from the luxor, it sucks balls

OK this might be a stupid question, but...what's the dress code like at a typical casino there? My friends and I are going to be spending a night in Vegas in about 2 weeks as a stop on our cross-country roadtrip, and we want to hit up the casinos. None of us have been to Vegas before and we really don't know what to expect. And we aren't going anywhere on the trip where we might want to dress up except Vegas. Also, can people under 21 get into a casino, just not play any games or do any gambling (one of our guys is 18)? thanks!

You don't have to dress up to go to a casino! I guess you can if you want to be taken more seriously or something Definitely bring khakis or nice pants/collared shirt if you plan on going to a club.

Your underage friend can walk throughout the casino, but I don't recommend him hanging around the machines with you - they'll pick up on that and generally send someone over to check your IDs. Just go to a casino with a lot of other stuff (New York, New York) so they can hang out while you're there.
