"When I introduced him (to ACU members) I said that, like a number of Republicans, Tom had done some work on the dark side," Keene recalled. "Now, he wants to harness his abilities for our agenda." Keene said he has no second thoughts about keeping DeLay on the 33-member board, which receives no pay. "Who can you think of better than Tom DeLay to be sitting in the room when you are setting priorities with Congress?" he asked. Two other ACU board members, former Texas Republican Party Chairman Tom Pauken and Virginia public relations executive Craig Shirley affirmed that they also quit the board over DeLay's arrival. "I just think we need to break loose from what was happening with the Republican Party in the post-Reagan era," said Pauken, citing a number of concerns including the scandal involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff. DeLay, who resigned after being indicted in Texas on money laundering charges related to campaign financing, did not return calls for comment. His trial is pending. Keene said DeLay had proposed an effort under which he'd raise $1 million for a grassroots lobbying effort, which DeLay would then run. But that idea was shelved when Keene and DeLay failed to agree on some of the details of how it would operate, Keene said."
