I'm finally graduating at the end of this semester. My family is coming up and I am only doing the major graduation. I am double majoring in Statistics and Computer Science.

They are both scheduled for 1:30PM so I can only make one of them.

From peoples experiences, which is the better ceremony to attend?

to me it doesn't really matter, I want the better experience for my family since they are the ones that have to watch.

I was in the Statistics graduation ceremony last year and it was pretty nice. Being a small department, there's plenty of time for picture taking and individual attention. At my brother's major ceremony, History at UNC, there were dozens of names read to walk across the stage.

This is exactly why I'm staggering my graduations with my two degrees: Engineering in the Fall, English in the Spring. I wish they wouldn't schedule the small ceremonies at the same time.

I tend to think whichever one has the smaller class would be better- a little more intimate and nicer for your folks, too.

this is off topic and i may make a new thread, but to anyone who has attended the large graduation at state - whats it like, as far as seriousness? i've heard of schools where kids take flasks, etc to graduation, at my cousins at UNC they ran down slip n slides on the football field, but at others its all business. whats it like at state?

No, I have a full year left. But instead of finishing them at the same time, I'm finishing one before the other. It must be nice to assume all kinds of bullshit without knowing the truth.

I went to the big graduation ceremony and felt like I wasted my time. The only thing interesting is standing up when the chancellor officially confers degrees on the undergrads. They don't read out the undergrads names or anything like that. It was pretty boring...

I had the same conflict and ended up doing to to the CSC ceremony. I enjoyed it being held at War Memorial. Made a nice impression on the parents. However, the ceremony itself was extremely large ... I think 180 with the graduate students attending as well. Joyce did something smart at the time to help resolve that ... she collected (with the blue cards) and read out a 10-15 second bio of each person as they walked across the stage. Vouk was either nervous, unprepared, or both and fumbled quite a bit during the ceremony. Hope that's improved since.

Anyways, your call. Whichever department you feel a closer attachment to and will enjoy being around your peers with. Most of the ST folks I knew at the time weren't graduating that semester, so CSC seemed the better choice.
