I might be stuck taking summer school and the selection for ECE 400 level classes is very limited.
i'm taking 402 but would you recommend

ece 435 with JJ Brickley
or ECE 456 with M.Y. Chow

right now i'm leaning toward 456 b.c it meets only two days a week and 435 is four days from 3:45-5.
how is the material and how do the professors match up.

i might consider ECE492V also but i can't find anything on the class or professor so i don't want to walk blindly into a monster class

I'm in 435 with Brickley this semester.

I like the material. The book (Nise) leaves something to be desired, IMHO. Brickley has been late almost every single day.

By late, I mean ~10 minutes on average.

By almost every single day, I mean all but 3.

But I do think the material is interesting.

It'd be cool if Bradicich was doing 406 this summer, I hear he's the man for that class

I'd do 3 400's in the spring. If not, 456.

ECE 456 is a great class. you'll need time out of class to work on your program for the robot though.

I would avoid 435 with Brickley at all costs unless you somehow think you want to work with Controls in your career. The homeworks are impossible so everyone just copies old solutions. The tests are even worse. He is in the running for one of the worst professors in ECE. He will be late almost every day by a significant amount and he will make you fall asleep within 5-10 minutes.

In general, what are some good 400 level electives to take? I'm trying to fill in my last class and I can't decide.

both are good courses

435 would probably be easier to take over the summer and will give you some knowledge that you'll use in 456

456 was a funner course though

[Edited on March 21, 2007 at 1:50 PM. Reason : if 492V is lasers with Kolbas, the class is neat but a beast but Kolbas is the best ECE prof we have]

^ What do you want? An easy elective? Interesting? Good Lab? Math based? etc

Obviously I would want the best of all worlds. I don't mind working hard or stringent math; ECE 301 was one of my favorite classes if that influnences your recommendation. I know mostly nothing about 400 level ECE classes so any general thoughts or comments on them would be very helpful. Thanks

One of the best classes I ever took in ECE. And Kolbas rocks. Its on laser electronics and optics. It can be challenging, but Kolbas teaches well. And he is a huge Trekkie, so you get some great stories and jokes.

^fyi...if you're counting the lab as one day when you have to get up at 8am...don't. the lab for 402 with hughes was not required...it was more like office hours for the TA.

however...maybe things have changed and class is 4 days a week or maybe attendance in the lab is necessary

Its either that or twice a week for 1hr 50 mins. Either way, it can suck pretty bad. Just hope you have a teacher you can enjoy that much of.
