^^^ Heh, nah they were seriously just guesses.I figured that #2 was the most memorable shot, and #1 was the most amazing shot.Plus this is ESPN, anything Duke or UNC related will be hyped to the max.

How many times do you see buzzer beaters involve the team having to go the length of the court to score? A bunch. State's was unique. It was an unpredictable dunk/alley oop. I mean look at how unreal it was. Lorenzo Charles was actually out of position. Hakeem Olajuwon a Top 50 All-Time NBA Player made an unlikely mental error in not blocking out/going up for the rebound. Clyde Drexler was also a Top 50 All-Time NBA Player. Dereck Whittenburg just threw up a prayer. Yes we were tied, but who knows if we would have been able to go another 5 mins of basketball with that Houston team. It was a unique and unlikely scenario that capped an unlikely championship run. There was nothing unique to Laettner's buzzer beater. I wonder if Duke hadn't later went on to win the National Championship if the play would still be held in such high regard. Obviously it would have been would one of the best buzzer beaters, but it's unlikely that it would be considered #1 by so many people.
3/19/2007 11:11:34 PM
I think alot of people only remember Jimmy V running around the court (a la CBS intro) than they do the dunk. Only footage they show of the Duke-UK game is the Laettner shot
3/19/2007 11:13:53 PM
I disagree. I think they go hand in hand. Every time I see Jimmy V running around the court they always show Lo Charles dunking right before. I don't think I've ever seen them just show Jimmy V running around the court.

Well the Laettner shot was very important historically, but the designed play wasn't anything out of the ordinary in a last shot attempt where you had to go the length of the floor in just a couple of seconds. Long in bounds pass, and shoot. The stars had to align for our play to happen.
3/19/2007 11:49:09 PM
well obivously they did, it was a long pass to say the least. Point is, if history and consequences of said buzzer beaters are significant in your rankings, Laettner's shot gets it. If your ranking is about probability and circumstances in the exact moment they happened, Charles' dunk gets it. I mean people can say it was the right to go to the elite 8, but it did affect the national title because we all know who won. To think that we could still be talking about five frosh winning the title vs having to listen about Duke, K, and Laettner is sickening and it's 2007, and it's all off of one do or die shot.[Edited on March 19, 2007 at 11:56 PM. I think Bryce Drew's was the best honestly. They were a #14 beating a #3 IIRC. This was the biggest upset, but then again it was a 1st round game.
3/20/2007 12:09:31 AM
An airball that turned into a dunk to win the National Championship against a much better team has to be #1. Not to mention the fact we weren't even suppose to be in the tournament.
3/20/2007 12:15:43 AM
I want State to be #1, but I really cant argue against Laetteners shot. Honestly, that Duke/Kentucky game was one of the greatest (if not the greatest) tournament game ever, and that I've seen. So many people stepped up for both teams, went into overtime, and Woods of UK hit that runner with 2.4 sec left, which made it look over. Then Hill throws it and Laettener makes the turn around. He didnt miss a single shot from anywhere all day.I'd say it got #1 because it was the end to an unbelievable game, not the circumstances........We should still have got #1 though
