There was a Wall Street Journal print article this morning (the WSJ has some of the best sports takes around) about the coaches who are the best mentors, meaning the coaches whose assistants have had the most success as head coaches. The Top 5 (in order):1) Jim Calhoun2) Rick Pitino3) HERB SENDEK4) Jim Boeheim5) Tom IzzoThe Bottom 5:1) Coach K2) Roy Williams3) Tubby Smith4) Lute Olsen5) Bob KnightOk, my question is.. other than Sean Miller what Sendek protegee has been good. I know Pitino has a ton including Sendek and Calhoun has 4 protegees in this years tourney alone, the most prominent being Dave Leitao.[Edited on March 17, 2007 at 1:40 PM. Reason : oh wow, didnt realize matta was a sendek asst coach at miami..]

Pitino was hired as Jim Boeheim's first assistant at Syracuse. About 5 years ago someone did a spread of the top coaching trees, it was amazing the main three were Jim Boeheim, Bob Knight and Dean Smith then all of the coaches that were under them.[Edited on March 17, 2007 at 3:26 PM. Reason : .]

Well this further cements Coach K's place as the #1 of the bottom five coaches with the firing of Tommy Amaker today

K learned from bob knight -- don't give out all the true wisdom or your protege will come back to kick your ass
