I dropped my car off before work today to get an oil change (don't know how to do it myself yet) and they (Meineke) just called to see if I wanted to get my transmission and power steering fluids flushed because they were 'dark'. I said to hold off for now. What do you think? A quick google search shows dark transmission should be changed, and I guess the same thing for power steering. I just don't want to get screwed over by a garage.I don't know too much about cars and my car will be there until I pick it up about 5pm.

Yea, I called my Dad and he said on our 1987 Chevy Blazer (K5?) we've never changd the power steering with its 200k+ miles. My sister's boyfriend (works at a dealership) said the transmission probably needs to be done at some point, just not at Meineke.

I've come to the conclusion a lot of automatic trannies could be saved if people changed the fluid every 30k to 50k miles. But not at Meineke. I'd do my own fluid/filter change and pull a cooler line to pump out as much old stuff as I could.A lot of you will argue with me here, but to you who do:

fuck that, drive an automatic till it dies

^^i agree. also, if it's an older tran with a bunch of miles you have no history on, leave it the hell alone. top off the fluid or throw some lucas in it, that's it.i'm also against flushing older transmissions at all. i've seen way to many die immediately after from a piece of junk that was loosened and clogged the cooler, etc.[Edited on March 15, 2007 at 6:18 PM.
