Working con staff again this year, wondering if anybody else on tww was planning on going, currently dealign with the neverending hunt for sponsors for our pc gaming area.

I'm a member of the 501st but at the time D*C falls around I'll be chest deep in student teaching. However, if anyone is considering Dragon*Con go for it. It's a lot of fun to chill and hang with everyone!

Its labor day weekend, con runs friday to monday, 4 days long, staff normally comes in on thursday to give an extra day to do setup. So official con goers would be August 31-Sept 3rd, 4 days 3 nights.

Last year they estiamted 40k folks actualy came to the con, this year the number will be higher, hotels are nervouse as the offical room capacity of the three combined is only 25k, thus they dont liek the numebrs as it shows how many folks crash in some of those small rooms. I have seen single bed rooms with 8+ in them, i only had 4 other folks split the room i rented last year. If you stay at the event hotels its worth splitting room as the rooms are 150-200 a night pre tax.

Dcon has the huuuge advantage that it has seperate tracts and events for mroe or less any fan, or you can sjtu wander aorund and gawk, take photos, drool on your camera while taking said photos, see a band or two perform, pay a small fee to get a photo with one of the big name stars with autograph, ect. Most authors ect will be on hand doing book signings ect, most but not all of the acotrs and the like have a per signiture per photo fee as they do cons to make cash.

We were going to go, but we started seeing how much the hotel was going to be and decided against it.

I think the novelty of all the people would wear out pretty much by the 2nd day. And also sharing a hotel with the majority of the attendees would be . . . interesting.

Though the board game areas would be a lot of fun.

WEll, regardless of what you want to see at a con, you will see both what you want and what you had prayed to god NOT to see at a con, assuming you wander aorund int he wrong areas, esp after hours once the public is out and no longer wandering through.

If you want to get trashed, plenty of palces to do so both with groups or in rooms for room parties, ect. As long as you stay coherent you will not have any regretable dragoncon moments. The opposite is true if you wander off, as the guy wandering around with security looking for his short, underwear, and con id badger monday morning could attest. Well, that and the still bleeding bite marks over 50% of his upper body. Like any place, passing out at a party is seen by seom folsk as an invitation to make you regret having done so. If you go to DC, even for a day, you will see everything form famouse authors and movie stars to small name starving artist selling sketches to star wars/star trek/firefly/StarGateSG1 costumers, event he huge group of aliens costumers with hand made replicas of every guna nd other weapon form that series of movies. You will also see the Larpers with swords, knives, guns, bows, and beanbag projectiles in a 4 dya long battle, and see the variouse costumers who have elarned that less is mroe if you are a 6'+ woman with 40-28-40 figures

You even may see the girl whose costume was advertised by the cards she handed out as being 100% duct tape, less than 16 square inches used total. Considering she was a D cup and a model for the duct tape clothign company, the site kept most of the media phtographers busy following her around.

http://dailydragon.dragoncon.net/ is the con newletter that is dropped of in stacks everywhere each day, good place to get osme general info about who all shows up at a place liek this, be it foplks form mythbusters or form robot wars, folks for the adult media discusion forum held in the champaign room(leading to a never ending running gag)

Even if you jsut go to dragoncon for a day, if you have family in the area and can get down there cheap and take M.A.R.T.A. over to the con, or if you and friends want to party in atlanta and want to shell out for a one day pass to gawk at the con, feel free. Dragoncon is a place you will, in your first 2-3 minutes, either decide you love or you hate, its nto a place you can be ambivilent about.
