i put a new chain setup on my bike. everything is 520.14 tooth in the front 45 tooth in the rear so -2, +2everything is fine except when i get to 6k+ rpms the front sprocket seems to rattle like hell. it's on their tight though.i noticed on the sprocket there is a side with more space (steel) than the other side. i put the side with more steel facing the engine and the side with less steel facing the screw that holds the sprocket on. this is also the side that had the writing on the sprocket facing in i believe.. the stock sprocket has equal steel on both sides (it was 525).the screw is TIGHT on their so i dont believe that is the problem.did i possibly put the sprocket on reversed? it's not a big difference the amount of spacing between the right and left side of the sprocket but i think it is a little.it also could be i took the bike up and down the block w/o my helmet one hearing rattling i never heard b4?the rattling starts at 6k and i think gets worse after that. not sure only went up to 8 or so (neighborh00d)[Edited on March 8, 2007 at 9:15 PM. did you put any lubrication on the chain? did you use a torque wrench?-2 on the front seems a bit much to mei dont think you can put the front sprocket on backwards, at least you cant on my cbr
3/8/2007 9:15:34 PM
the chain came prelubed like crazy. torque wrench i dont have one, so i just tightened it up good and tight.
3/8/2007 9:16:28 PM
the chain is gonna make some noise, especially without a helmetmake sure you have the right amount of tension in the chainride it with your helmet on and check tension after 20 minutes or so
3/8/2007 9:22:58 PM
well the chain is at a good tension. I'll take it for a spin tomorrow. but the chain/rattling sound that is made is more than i have ever heard on a bike b4. and it only starts after 6kim thinkin this sprocket can be put on wrong bc it's a 520 and not stock 525 so they have to give more space on one side to have the rubber guides on the swing arm work properly?i ran a -2 on my r6 and it was just fine. -3 is when it gets to extreme for the chain to bend properly but that still can be used lol.ty for the help tww pwns. my sportsbikes forums take forever to respond.[Edited on March 8, 2007 at 9:28 PM. wait, is the rattling only with engine speed and not with wheel speed? if thats the case the chain wouldn't make sense, make sure you didnt leave something hanging loose from the engine thats rattling, and if you over torque the front sprocket bolt you can easily fuck up the output shaft
3/8/2007 9:38:18 PM
hmm nothing loose from engine it did the same thing in 2nd gear at around 5-6k i didnt take it over those rpms tho. I only took it up and down the block like 4 times I'll run with a helmet tomorrow and see what is up.I'll check my front engine mount bolts for my cage on the bike. sometimes that shit gets loose. and not wearing helmet might make it seem much worse.ty guys[Edited on March 8, 2007 at 9:44 PM. and for future reference, if in doubt, just measure from the sprocket center to shoulder mounting face and compare it to the old one if in doubt which way it goes, and if all else fails, wrap a string around the rear hub, hold it across the rear sprocket and on the front edge of the front to see if it touches all four spots on both sprockets for alignment

kyle, first of all, it's not your sprocket raddling, it's your chain hitting up against the swingarm. 2'nd, it can't be judged by RPM's cuz you can be in different gears and your chain will spin at different speeds, so if it's really at 6K rpm, then you got a loose engine, mine does that around 5200, cuz of my cage.

^hmm makes sense. so the 14tooth is gonna make it slap the shit outta it? it's at the right tension right now. a lil loose but not my much at all.^^good idea [Edited on March 8, 2007 at 9:57 PM. Reason : d]

something about resonant frequency or some crap like that. here you go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resonance

I shitted in my pants. Serious resonance.

^nicely done.alright i lubed the shit outta the chain even tho it came prelubed. .well their lube sucks and the chain was noisy my lube cleaned it right up.whew that is going to sound bad out of context.this bitch will pull up now. already smashed my balls on the gas tank a couple times.when im going 45-50 my speedo reads ~70 lol

what rpms is that thing turning while at highway speeds.[Edited on March 9, 2007 at 8:45 PM. Reason : 1]

i bet you it pulled up just fine before regearing with a swift twist of the throttle, proper weight transfer, and some cojones. hell, even without the weight transfer...

^^meh not really u'd have to sit back all the way if u wanted it to come up, at least for me. jeff better not chime in he weighs 120.um highway not sure.. it will probably be around 10,000 rpms at 80? the top speed should now be 140. a guy with a 1 down 2 up setup hit 154 with his bike (speedo calibrated). a rarely do highway so it's not a big deal. I like the setup i dont have to shift as much also. and the accleration is def. a lot better slid my damn ass back while the front wheel was liftin up in 1st and second lol.mine is 2 down 2 up.also i think it's about the same setup as vlads. he runs a 50tooth on the rear i think. my setup would be... roughly a 49 tooth (2 down in front ='s 4 up in rear) so 6 up on the 43.not sure what gsxr's run as stock rear sprocket or how their gearing is.[Edited on March 10, 2007 at 12:27 AM.
