Any one in 303 today get what happened. They were talking about some kind of gravitational shift and this guy answered in a think accent, and alexander was like "Buubububububbubbbu.....thats right"Anyone know what happened?
2/27/2007 11:17:30 PM
Alexander was on a role and the guy interrupted him, and he sorta mumbled with his accent so even i couldn't here him, and I was right near him, and I think Alexander just mocked him and moved on..but it was funny as hell.
2/27/2007 11:33:36 PM
That kid was at least moderately retarded sounding
2/27/2007 11:52:49 PM
yeah he was def mocking the asian kid. but it was alright tho, he came back to the kid and the kid said how it wasn't light that was bending it was space so kid got his spotlight moment.and is it just me, or does he spend 40% of class talking about astrophysics and the other 60% on ECE303. And out of that 60%, 30% of it feels like a math class which has very little relation to the subject material...the dude just likes math.don't get me wrong, i really enjoy his teaching style and thinks hes smart/funny as hell...i just wish he spent more time talking about electromagnetic theory
2/28/2007 12:46:25 AM
His undergrad is Physics...so maybe that explains somthing. He also loves the movie Contact, maybe (hopefully) thats the only thing we have in common...
2/28/2007 12:55:23 AM
yeah that clears some things up.
2/28/2007 12:58:19 AM
Holy shit, I think that at least 80% of that class is on TWW.^^^ I'm pretty sure that electromagnetic theory is pretty much all math.
2/28/2007 8:27:59 AM
back in the day, he was a very notable researcher. according to his former graduate student who now works in academic affairs, he got a very prestigious NSF award for research in EM/RF stuff, I think in the mid 80's. he was also in the navy, where he served on a battleship. not shitting you. alexander is stranger than fiction.
2/28/2007 11:50:11 AM
he doesn't take showers... if you don't believe me, go into his office and talk to him. he smells like an old homeless person
2/28/2007 12:40:47 PM
only because i care...he wasn't in the navy, rather he was in the army. in 1986 he got the presidential young investigator award from the NSF for his work in adapative filtering, and has *even written a book*, entitled adaptive signal processing (9th floor stacks). damn, he was even the editor of the IEEE Journal on Speech and Signal Processing.who knew?all of that was from the biography on him at the end of one of his papers that i found from IEEEXplorer.
2/28/2007 3:01:35 PM
doenst Lazzi teach that class any more?
3/2/2007 12:02:18 AM
wow, I didn't know that about Alexander. I enjoy his classes.

Alexander said in class yesterday that, to some people's surprise and to others chagrin, the further you go along in EE, the more mathematical it becomes.I wondered for a minute if he had read this thread.
3/2/2007 8:04:17 AM
All engineering and physical sciences are built on math, that's why.
3/2/2007 10:04:42 AM
^ Thanks, Capt. Obvious.
3/2/2007 10:29:01 AM
He's a good teacher and definitely not hung up on impressions...bikes everywhere and wears those gym shirts all the time. I always assumed there was more to his story so I never questioned his credentials. He mentioned one time that he thought he was the lowest paid EE faculty member, I assumed by choice, something like his version of retirement.
3/2/2007 10:56:50 AM
If he doesn't want as much money as the other faculty members, tell him to send the leftover money to me.
3/2/2007 11:16:17 AM
it looks like he's teaching ECE 513 in the fall...signal processing. that would be awesome. i'll have to audit that or something.i do remember once in 420 someone took a picture of him with their cell phone, and that about pushed him over the edge. he really railed on the guy for a good 5-10 minutes.
3/2/2007 11:50:38 AM
Which Alexander? I think there were two of them teaching emag at one time.I had the shorter scruffy looking soft spoken guy.
3/2/2007 2:52:51 PM
^^that is the one day of the semester that i regretted skipping class
3/2/2007 4:02:53 PM
^^ i didnt think the other Alexander taught 303
3/2/2007 4:11:41 PM
the exact wording may be off but ...
3/2/2007 7:03:01 PM
^ that was a good day. what was so funny is just how he exclaimed it.. like? are you fucking serious? a DOG?! i don't even have a drivers license..

Someone told me that during ece301 a year or two ago he was writing on the board one day when he just let the chalk slide accross the board and then he just broke down and started *crying*, saying nobody cares about the class and then challenged everyone to find a better prof who writes their own notes. Needless to say, his notes are awesome.
3/4/2007 1:48:44 PM
^^^holy shit he looks totally different now[Edited on March 4, 2007 at 1:51 PM. Reason : ]

^^I've not had him but I heard about something like that happening last year too.
3/4/2007 3:37:49 PM
... what does the s stand for?
3/7/2007 7:56:27 PM
i think it's sam...i think i remember seeing that somewhere?

Shit, he's been here since '82 and is still an associate professor--that's fucked up on da real
3/9/2007 5:13:23 PM
Samuel Thomas Alexander
3/9/2007 6:38:26 PM
He's the best ECE professor I've had here. He's a little strange but he explains things very well.
