My officemate has a wierd problem. When logging in or unlocking his computer, if he misstypes his password, it takes 2-4 minutes to make whatever query the system makes and tell his that the password is incorrect. If he types it correctly there isn't a problem. Anyone know what would make this happen?

My guess is he is missing localhost in /etc/hosts or something of that nature.

Everything looks fine in /etc/hosts... at least it looks similar to my file. Any other ideas?

what is he using to lock his computer? when he initially logs in, what runtime level? I have problems with anything higher than 2.

^ I don't know. We don't manage the environment. It's all Redhat Enterprise with Gnome. As for how he locks the terminal, he uses either the lock screen option from the gnome action bar or it locks when the screensaver turns on.

My guesses:

1) /etc/hosts problem already mentioned
2) pam (or whatever) wait time between password failures high
3) pam / ldap / password cache w/ directory server is sloow (this can be a result of a number of things)
