what is the best additive for helping clicking lifters (other than Seafoam)

top your oil off, I have this same problem with my E36 M3, mostly when its cold outside
2/25/2007 5:58:10 PM
why would you want one other than seafoam when it works?
2/25/2007 6:03:12 PM
already tried it....looking for something else....

I would say add some new lifters into the equasion. Or fuck it, dump some saw dust in there... pine works well.

marvel mystery oil
2/25/2007 6:48:42 PM
yeah, replace the lifters. my 3000gt does the same thing in the cold.

try auto trans fluid in the oil. run in a bit, drain/refill with fresh oil.if it still does it after trying those couple of tricks, might be time for some new lifters.[Edited on February 25, 2007 at 7:01 PM. Reason : .]

change ur oil and substitute a quart of lucas, its thicker so it will help, also ^ helps alot too

little background here guys.....it is a 1976 6.6L pontiac w/ prob 200k miles on it....there is no reason to tear into the engine at all unless it is coming out and a new one is going in.....i am just looking for a quick fix here....

??Just pull the intake, valve covers, and take the rockers off. slide out the pushrods and snatch the lifters out.You will need intake gasket set, 2 valve cover gaskets, 16 lifters, oil and filter, and some coolant. A basic SAE toolset and a $30 torque wrench from Advance Auto will do the job just fine. Maybe youll need to buy a $10 lifter puller, they have that too.

i assume you're sure it's a lifter tick? some people mistake one for an exhaust manifold leak.lifters are easy on that car... try some auto trans fluid like i said, if that doesn't work just replace them. compressed air makes it easier.don't put any lucas in it for any extended amount of time, unless you want to blow it up.[Edited on February 25, 2007 at 7:42 PM. HAHAHA...WOW. Somebody else knocking Lucas mucous...Just curious, Ivan...why you say that about Lucas? I'm not a big fan of the stuff, and don't recommend using it.

marvel mystery oil or rislone?basically thin oils.
2/25/2007 11:00:05 PM
youre calling rislone "motor honey" a thin oil??
2/25/2007 11:11:09 PM
Rislone is thin. Like fucking kerosene.Motor Honey is a Casite product, and has a bunch of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate in it, same as STP.
2/25/2007 11:21:54 PM
because it's thick as mollases... you might have some nice pressure, but your flow goes to hell. hell, i'd put it in a motor i didn;t care about to stop some smoking/leaking. nothing else though.i will use the transmission stuff on a dieing unit in a heartbeat though. i've seen that stuff perform near miracles.

StayTogetherPleaseNuff said,The ATF trick works great for cleaning out all of the small passages in any motor. I would also switch to a thinner oil. I still run 10/30 in all my junk that has 120k+. Rember thinner oil moves much easier. Its even more important when its cold.
