So I'm gonna be moving back to Raleigh next month (woo!) and I think I might get Dish HD / DirecTV HD instead of TWC because I want ESPN-U.TWC's internet is like $45/month after a 6-month promo, so I'm looking for something cheaper. Does Verizon do naked DSL in the area? Is all you need a home w/ pre-wired telephone service (but no landline service hooked up, of course)?Anyone have this? Easy to get? Work okay? What are you paying per month?

So you want to be able to download porn?
2/19/2007 8:25:09 AM
Go with TWC on your initial move-in to save yourself some headaches. Do your research if you want to pay less and/or get fed up with service AFTER you move in.

There's no way in the world you're going to convince me TWC is "less headache" than getting a root canal.I've lived in Raleigh before and dealt with that company...no way any other internet provider is any worse.Saving headache would be getting the right connection the right time, not trying to cancel cable & get naked DSL in 6 months.
2/19/2007 8:50:42 AM
TWC isn't the greatest, but it is better than any DSL offering in the area.
2/19/2007 8:53:18 AM
TWC also has RoadRunner Lite which is DSL speed at a comparable price

they also do this little thing called promotional deals where you can call them up and tell them you're going to switch carriers for a better deal, then they forward you to customer retention and you end up paying $30/mo to get a 6MBit line fwiw, i have yet to have any probs with them.[Edited on February 19, 2007 at 10:17 AM. how the hell is twc setup a headache? the call takes about 5 minutes
2/19/2007 10:20:18 AM
Sure, the call is simple, but seriously I hadta wait like 4 weeks to get an 8300HD DVR last time I used them. No telling how long I'd hafta wait for a cable modem.I might do that RR Lite thing though, I just need quick surfing, I don't d/load many large files. Anyone have RR Lite? What's it run ya?

To answer the original question:

twc seriously underestimated the demand for the 8300 boxesi think they're getting back on track
2/19/2007 11:31:09 AM
XMAS TIME PWNT THEM ON HDDVRS... THEY DIDN'T THINK THAT MANY HDTVS WOULD BE SOLD
2/19/2007 11:35:44 AM
^^ This was around 1.5 years ago -- I heard of the recent shortages, but just getting an appt. for an installer to come out w/ one seriously was like a 1 month wait. I suppose it'll take a month or so to close on a home, so once I find out the address I'll call TWC a month in advance and hopefully it'll even out

have a look at http://www.clearwire.com[Edited on February 19, 2007 at 3:01 PM. Reason : .]

clearwire ... complete with that ugly bulky box that you have to drag around with you So, who you gonna be working for southpaw??
2/19/2007 4:22:58 PM
RR Lite / Dish network herei love it
2/19/2007 5:04:17 PM
^^ you don't have to drag anything around with you...the clearwire modem is just barely taller than a motorola surfboard, but skinnier...you only carry it around if you want to be able to access the internet wirelessly in other areas (which, obviously, isn't even an option with RR or DSL)...additionally, it's my understanding that they have a PCMCIA (and whatever the new form factor is, i forget) clearwire card that you can use for an additional $4.99/monthi have clearwire and i have no complaints
2/19/2007 5:11:18 PM
Mmmm...5Mbps RR for $35 for 6-months, then I switch to 1.5Mbps service for $30/month.I like the sound of that. I didn't know they had a 1.5Mbps option, that's good news to robster: I'm starting March 12th w/ Nortel -- just tired of WV, should've never left Raleigh, but I'm thrilled to be headed backstill doin' my tech journalism on the side too
2/19/2007 5:17:17 PM
^^How much is the clearwire after the initial 3 months or whatever it is for 19.99? It's not available where I currently live but I'm selling my house and moving into an area where it is available and was curious about the final pricing..
2/19/2007 5:36:26 PM
Verizon does not serve raleigh, they do serve Durham.Bellsouth (now AT&T) has not offered naked DSL. Part of the agreement with the AT&T merger is that they must provide naked DSL, I think with 768Kbps downstream. But it could be months or longer before that is available.RR Lite is $24.95/mo. One person at TWC told me that it is 3Mbps, another said it is 1.5Mbps. It is actually 768Kbps down (as of my speed test last week).

For those of you who think getting time warner setup is a headache, you must be retarded.I signed up at circuit city for it at 6pm tonight, Called the 1800# to finalize everything at 9:30pm, spent 10 minutes on the phone setting up my account, and on thursday 8am-noon, I will have my internet and cable setup, including DVR. If that is a headache, then you are a fucktard
2/20/2007 11:08:32 PM
^to be fair you are not done yet, wait till youre online before you celebrate.
2/20/2007 11:13:29 PM
^This will be the 3rd location in 3 years that we have setup like this. Never had it take longer than 3 days for the entire process.
2/21/2007 11:05:42 AM
I made TWC my bitch.I got my 8Mbps connection and I love it.
