good riddance

from profootballtalk

Quote :
"TUNA IN, IRVIN OUT IN BRISTOL

An industry source tells us that Bill Parcells has signed on with ESPN, and that Michael Irvin is out.

"It's done," said the source. "Rock solid."

Parcells, we're told, will be part of the 78-person Monday night crew, which is dispatched from Bristol on a weekly basis to bring grandeur to (and thus justify) the network's $1.1 billion per year investment in the MNF franchise.

As to Irvin, it's anyone's guess where he now lands. Maybe he'll retreat to FSN, which is where he rehabilitated his image after his playing career and before making the leap to Bristol.

Meanwhile, we assume that the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be televised once again by ESPN, which will make the day more than a little awkward, in our view.

Irvin is objectively likeable, but he is gratuitously controversial. His biases as an analyst are at times obvious to the point of laughable. Also, he was suspended in November 2005 for failing to disclose a recent arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia. In 2006, his musings regarding the possible presence of African-American DNA in Gomer Pyle-white Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo prompted a torrent of criticism that both the network and Irvin initially did their best to ignore.

Says a member of PFT Planet regarding the Parcells-for-Irvin swap: "Sweet Irony. Michael Irvin gets T.O. on the Cowboys. T.O. causes Bill Parcells to retire from Cowboys. Parcells takes Irvin's job at ESPN." "

With his future at ESPN in doubt, the Playmaker shows some goodwill by, um, watering the plants

I always kinda liked Irvin on ESPN. his daily feuds with Ditka were classic . Bill Parcells... blahh. Doesn't excite me all that much.

Note to CBS: Hire Irvin to replace Shannon Sharpe. That dude is by far the worst analyst on TV. Everytime he talks I can't help but laugh

which could be appreciated, but it was at the price of 59 other minutes of retardation/dallas cowboys bullshit bias/incoherent, uneducated rants

That's the first thing I thought too.

He's going to ridicule himself in the mirror for 20 minutes everyday.

Well, at least we haven't heard anything that caused him to get fired (other than Parcells joining the staff), so I guess Irvin left on good terms. Probably his best bet is FSN, or maybe he can go to NFL Network.

how could you possibly say Mike Irvin was a good analyst? He picked the Cowboys to win the superbowl this year, all he wanted to talk about was the fucking Cowboys all the time. Fuck the Dallas Cowboys and fuck Mike Irvin.

man its not just about being right, he made the show fun and people like that, which leads me to think the only possible reason for him being let go must be either about money, or his arrest half way through the season

Irvin was horrible. For everyone who thought he was a good analyst...you all are fucking retarded. His entertainment value wasn't even close to making up for the dumb statements he would make. You could tell the other analysts thought he was a joke.

Early in the season, when they were ranking AFC teams, and Baltimore had just lost to Denver in a game which they only scored 3 points. Irvin kept insisting that Baltimore was the best team in the AFC, above Denver. The other guys were like "you're a fucking idiot". That's about the point I realized he was just no good as an analyst. What he needs is a show similar to Steven A. Smith's, where he doesn't actually have to make sense.

As a side note, all they need now is Bobby Knight and my dream MNF commentating team will come to fruition

having parcells and irvin on at the same time would have been fun to watch. I can just imagine the looks Parcells would have made at some of Irvin's comments.

I'm aware of what happened later. That's more or less irrelevant. Given the time and situation, it was a ridiculous and very biased statement on Irvin's part. Saying he should get credit cuz of what happened is later is like giving Earl credit for predicting the UNC win.

still gets a

we should totally fault the guy for seeing one team's potential over another and eventually being right...

when did being right begin to not matter?

oh yeah...when popular opinion became more important...
