Im just curious if you happen to have some Ad Statistics besides just how often it has been loaded. I have a couple of people who might buy some ad space to help support TWW. Is there any data as to how often people are clicking the ads in a given day or could that be set up? I know if the one company I work for places an ad they can track it on their side - but I need a bit of information to convince them to do it probably.

the click statistics vary from ad to ad. Currently all the ads in the pool have been running for hundreds of days and are getting a little boring. I think with some more variety it would be more effective. current ads are clicked on once about every 2000 times they are shown (not very good ratio). under your "my ads" page it will give in depth statistics about the performance of your ad.I personally think click statistics are pretty much bullshit. The most common things that people say about banner ads is "those things suck, I never click on them". well you don't see people exiting off the highway everytime they see a roadsign. people don't run out to the store everytime they see a tv commercial for a store. I know those are somewhat inaccurate analogies, but my point is that branding should be the point of any internet advertising campaign. I may have never clicked on an x10 popup, but i sure can guarantee you that if I ever need a wireless video camera, I'm sure going to stop by x10.com to see what they have to offer!anyway, people do notice the ads and that is our goal. I doubt there are more than a few regulars on this site that aren't familiar with ruckus pizza. most people could probably recite the wording in our school tool ads! The only way you are going to know how effective TWW advertising is, is to try it out. you guys might be the guinea pigs, but it only takes 10 BUCKS!

yeah, but advertising at the end of the year is pointless...wait till the middle of the summer...then it'll get more stuff...i know that yosh103 and myself are gonna make an add for APO recruitment...but we are gonna wait till the middle of the summer...
5/2/2002 3:32:10 PM
oh im not looking into just getting it now.. i won't be working for the company this summer - but all year long i do contract work for them as well as a few others - they always look for ad opportunities and TWW definatly has a lot of activity in its user base. A lot of people here are always looking for the oddest things - so I don't see how any ad can go wrong.. the ones I have in mind deal with some equipment, clothing, and possibly a web design company. Even thru summer I might be able to pull a couple people into the ads.... since I haven't setup a premium user account I wanted to help out TWW and the people advertising both if at all possible. Once I get paid maybe I can get a premium account

Can I put up an ad with demons and the virgin mary getting raped?
5/4/2002 3:09:30 AM
uh, i'd have to see it before i can comment
5/4/2002 10:29:33 AM
I might buy an ad sometime soon.
5/4/2002 1:08:19 PM
you buy "views", not ads. you can add as many ads as you want without even buying views. once you buy views you can turn each add on and off in realtime
5/4/2002 1:15:29 PM
What happens if someone doesnt like you and just hits refresh a bunch of times to get the views up? Is that possible?
5/4/2002 2:31:27 PM
so what? you are paying for 100,000 views...it'd be around for a while i bet...
5/4/2002 3:52:55 PM
100,000 views would be gone in less than a day if you didn't manage the time that they were up.its Saturday at 4 pm and already: Ad Views Today : 69,381its only the 4th and already: Ad Views This Month: 556,734just have to decide when the most people will be on i guess.
5/4/2002 4:13:06 PM
i can start adding more TWW ads in the pool if people don't want many views. i was hoping that the ad pool would be filled with everyone else's ads by now!currently, if someone put one add in the pool, it would take about 3 days to use 100,000 views up.it would take a lot of traffic from one host to actually have much impact on ad stats. definitely more than the amount of traffic it takes to get banned [Edited on May 4, 2002 at 4:59 PM. oh yeah, i didn't even think about there being 3 (at this time) ads floating around. sorry about that. i would advertise if i had something to sell. which i might in the next month or so.

Jake you should talk to Panhellenic. I'd sent you an email earlier about it. They'd probably be very interested, esp. if you can figure a way to have the ad show for only females + unregistered ppl and not males or females who are juniors/seniors/grad students (bc very very few of them tend to rush after being in school that long).

If I had the time to do it, I would make up a little banner saying something along the line of "This page brought to you in part through the kindness of bigginal's $10 donation. Go make your own!" with a link pointing them to the ads page. The idea is that you could actually see who's donated money in that manner. Like I said....if I had the time...Oh, and the other thing that's holding me up from doing it (and becoming Premium) is that you only accept payments through Paypal. I can honestly tell you that unless they hold a monopoly on the market in the future, I won't be a Paypal user (see http://www.paypalsucks.com). So is there any way you could make that accomodation for us non-Paypal people? -bigginal
5/6/2002 4:36:28 PM
paypal really isn't bad. maybe if the users could scrounge up more than the $75 dollars a month that we are currently making, we would look into it!from the register:http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/23/24283.html

chocoholic, our current ad system doesn't allow for that kind of targetting. the prices are really cheap enough where it shouldn't matter too much. 10 bucks will buy you around 3 days of a LOT of exposure.
5/6/2002 4:52:44 PM
Perhaps an idea for the add (if it's not already) would be to have a way for the add owner to give it a weight on how often it would be shown in comparison to other adds.

all these new ads are doing pretty well. i guess it is just good to keep em fresh!
5/8/2002 7:01:24 PM
can you please have them launch into a new window???? Just a convinence thing that I like so when I see an ad i like i don't lose my place reading TWW
5/8/2002 7:09:07 PM
well its not really common practice to have them open in a new window... but I guess none of the stuff we are doing with ads is common practice! If it makes users more likely to follow the link, i imagine advertisers would be happy. we'll give it a try.[Edited on May 8, 2002 at 7:20 PM. Reason : .]

quick question... does looking at the "advertise" section count as an adview?
5/8/2002 8:46:43 PM
nah, and clicking on the ads from there doesn't count as clickthroughs
5/8/2002 9:31:35 PM
much thanks for having them open into new window
5/9/2002 5:14:42 PM
I personally think that this could be better set as a user or advertiser option. On the web sites I work with I make links an option. If the user wants pop-ups they use the radio button to get pop-ups. If they don't want pop-ups they select the later button. If that is not an attractive option have the advertiser select how they want the ad linked. Or use this advise how you will. I guarantee though that I am not going to be to big on clicking links while they pop-up. I don't like multiple browsers. (okay maybe I will but the option is of benefit to tww).
