they're magnet schools and yes they exist. a relative was in one that taught most of their classes in french. it was public. the idea is to teach languages in a natural setting while the students can still easily learn a second language.

and i would think with the utter lack of qualified arabic translators in the military/intelligence fields, this would be a great way to groom some from an early age.

^arabic is spoken by a large part of the world. why shouldn't we try to teach some of our kids that if they choose (and 1 school out of the entire NYC system isn't exactly a huge commitment)

^^^ There are, and they're a fantastic idea.

It's not only for Arabs, and all the classes aren't in Arabic.

All the kids take Arabic, and they try and integrate as much of it as they can into the curriculum.

Again- it's a fan-freaking-tastic idea. Especially at a young age.

Military Intellegence has a very fine linguistics school and recruits the best talent already. There is no need for a public school in arabic. Now, if this were for Chinese....then maybe they have something going (Since China will be the next world superpower)

not to mention learning a language early means that you can have two language centers in the brain (ie you basically can have two "primary" languages if it's done right)

NYC has several high schools similar to the math and science school which you need to test into. They all are specialized and I think this may be a new one.

This is a school open to everyone.

It's goal is to teach a language.

This school isn't teaching "only Arab culture" as a curriculum. It's teaching all the normal shit with an Arabic bent. And since we don't mind teaching the normal shit with a Western bent, I'm not sure why we should care about this.

I am assuming, of course, that there is a large enough part of NYC's population to warrant the creation of an entire specialized school.
