Just keep in mind that it's 6% until April 30th, 2007. Then it goes back to 5.05.Now is a great time to start an account though.[Edited on February 13, 2007 at 7:04 AM. Reason : .]

I have a HSBC Direct account. Yes it's legit. Yes you can take money without penalty. Also, unlike the other "direct" accounts like ING and Emigrant, you get an ATM card.HSBC operates a regular brick and mortar bank, but not around here. They are mostly in the NE and west coast. That's why most people have never heard of them.

I've heard of HSBC before, its just that I never transacted any business with them, or don't know anyone who have either.

isn't HSBC HongKong Savings Bank of China or something?
2/13/2007 12:22:09 PM
Whatever, they don't do business or advertise within like 500 miles of here. I never heard of them until I cam across HSBCDirect online.

Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was the start of it. Its HSBC Holding plc now though They are one of the largest financial organizations in the world
2/13/2007 1:51:38 PM
yeah, you'd pretty much have to live in a bubble to not have heard of them.
2/13/2007 4:52:14 PM

started an HSBC savings last year because they had the highest rate... theres no fee for your first like 5 bank-to-bank transfers per month. i've only ever put money in, and even if i was taking it out, it wouldnt be every week, it'd be a 1 time thing.when they started this 6% promotion i moved a couple thousand more in there.

I've been thinking about this lately. I opened up savings account a few months ago at First Citizen's. I think they are giving me like half a percent on the best account they could offer me. Also there is a $1000 minimum balance. This HSBC seems too good to be true: no minimum balance, no monthly fees. Even a CD offers a lower rate. Am I missing something?[Edited on February 20, 2007 at 10:33 AM. Reason : ]

The only thing I can think of is that you would have easier access to your money with FC. However, that really isn't true with HSBC, b/c they give you an ATM card. However, there aren't any HSBC's around here, so you would pay an ATM fee.The only other thing is that you primarily manage your account on the internet, which would be a deal breaker for some people, but not our generation.[Edited on February 20, 2007 at 11:38 AM.
