Current set-up:

939 A64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo4
1 gig PC3200
Seagate 7200 rpm HD
X800pro

I'm thinking of buying:

939 A64 X2 4400+ @$179
36 gig Raptor @$105
Another gig of PC3200 @$80

Is there a better way to spend ~$350? I'm a little iffy about the memory; is the extra gig worth it?

Wait another year and build something from scratch. You're looking at minimal performance inprovements.

I also agree on saving money and wait. If you want to upgrade now, I'd look into the graphics and add another gig of ram. Although DDR prices have been rising slowly so their manufacturing less of them compared to DDR2. Just get a decent card like the 7950gt or the 1900xt for 200-300 (some times cheaper after rebates) then if and when you build a new computer down the line, you can just drop the new gpu in that and still have a decent computer.

Well that's what I'm hesitant to do. Will a directx 9 card really be any good down the line?

My x800pro is doing fine for BF2 and Oblivion-- the problem is the stinking load times and the lag I sometimes have to deal with when working with multiple large office files. My upgrades were directed at solving this.

^ The RAM will help with the latter problem. It probably will be worth the money if you do the office thing a lot.

fuck a raptor, I have one. it's too small for all your games to fit on and keep the drive optimally full (empty). it really isn't worth the money. get a 320gb 16mb l2 cache 7200rpm sata2 drive
