Subject: Media Alert - Apply for Wake County's Spay Day

February 7, 2007

TO: All Media

FROM: Sharon Brown, Public Affairs Director
(919) 856-7330

RE: Apply through Feb. 14 for Spay Day events, Feb. 26-28

The deadline is Wednesday, February 14, to apply for the Wake County Animal
Care, Control and Adoption Center's annual Spay Day event, providing free
and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for pets. Three local veterinarians
will perform surgeries on-site at the Center from February 26-28, with
another 10 vets to provide services in March. Wake's Spay Day
(http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/pet_overpopulation_and_o
wnership_statistics/spay_day_usa/) program is designed to assist residents
who cannot afford to spay or neuter their pets. Surgeries are scheduled by
appointment after the County approves an application, available online at
http://www.wakegov.com and at Wake County Human Services Centers located at 220
Swinburne Street, Raleigh; 130 N. Judd Parkway NE, Fuquay-Varina; and 1002
Dogwood Drive, Zebulon. The goal of this year's event is to spay and neuter
300 pets in Wake County.

It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up,
house, euthanize and dispose of unwanted animals. Nearly 20,000 animals pass
through the Wake County Animal Center and SPCA of Wake County shelters each
year; about 34% of those find permanent homes. Inspired by the Doris Day
Animal Foundation, Spay Day USA was created to raise public awareness of pet
overpopulation, promote spay and neuter surgeries as a primary means of
addressing the problem, and to inspire everyone to take personal
responsibility for preventing the births of excess litters. Call 212-PETS
(7387) for more information.
