for example a break in. does it cover the broken window and any of the contents in the home. Television, laptop, etc. ?kind of an emergency[Edited on February 7, 2007 at 12:48 AM. Reason : . ]

Obligatory asshole response:Just a thought, but maybe you should read your policy packet. Now, depending on the stipulations of the policy you should be covered after you meet your deductiable (so your going to lose some money right there, and they may raise your rates after the claim). You may have to prove you actually owned the items you claimed, and depending on the policy you will get either replacement costs or the current value of stolen items (pray it's replacement costs).

not mine. it's my extremely upset girlfriend who is here and had to be notified over the phone he things were stolenhence how i am on a computer[Edited on February 7, 2007 at 1:01 AM. Reason : .]

I'd go out and tell your neighbors "your girlfriends shit was stolen"
2/7/2007 1:13:49 AM
just an fyi, homeowner's insurance is a "use it and lose it" policy. only use h.i. for catastrophic events. never use it for a broken window, tv, laptop, etc.
2/7/2007 9:42:28 AM
^what he said.don't use it for anything short of catastrophe.
2/7/2007 9:54:21 AM
^^,^ why?
2/7/2007 9:55:43 AM
They can and, in many cases will simply drop your coverage for a small claim. And the claim will affect your CLUE score, which means that other insurance companies may not grant you an new policy. And if they do, you'll pay out the ass for it. It's a bunch of horseshit, but unfortunately, it's reality. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourHome/InsurersKeepASecretHistoryOfYourHome.aspx]]

damnthats shitty
2/7/2007 10:27:45 AM
that all depends on the company you have. I know we filed a claim for water damage from a busted plumbing fitting, they covered everything, plumbing work, water removal, drying out, moisture testing, mold/mildew cleaning, a new vanity, new carpet and padding, new tile, etc... basically an almost new bathroom/closet. all I had to cover was my deductible. Got the renewal for this year about a month or two later and it actually went down. Like I said, guess it depends on your company. Ours is through USAA. Basically a 4K repair cost us $500.
2/7/2007 10:53:20 AM
i would consider that a catastrophe. i think what they're refering to more is the small things here and there that happen.
2/7/2007 10:54:33 AM
^^ USAA is also not like every other insurance company. And not everyone can get USAA insurance. They only insure active military and veterans.
2/7/2007 10:56:58 AM
...and their dependents.
2/7/2007 11:00:07 AM
I have USAA too, and they don't seem to be shady like most other insurance companies. I've never had to file a claim on a homeowners policy though.
2/7/2007 11:01:52 AM
I love USAA
2/7/2007 11:04:06 AM
USAA chooses not to participate in the real work and their customer benefit from that practice.
2/7/2007 11:18:06 AM
Farm Bureau of NC has been wonderful so far. Insurance- checkWind and Hail Coverage- checkFlood Coverage- check
2/7/2007 11:21:29 AM
I love USAA! Its been great for me.Yet another post that doesn't help you out. Sorry
2/7/2007 11:26:36 AM
yea, get insured by Farm Bureau or USAA and you won't have to deal with that use it and lose it bullshit.

can you get renter's insurance when you own a house?wouldn't you have to be a "renter"?[Edited on February 7, 2007 at 1:17 PM. Reason : d]
2/7/2007 1:16:44 PM
i have usaai'd also never make a claim like this
2/7/2007 1:17:14 PM
sorry, forgot you're all not renting.
2/7/2007 1:21:12 PM
I have renters insurance and despite living in NYC its still only like $14/month. Its totally worth it. I have 2 roommates and neither has insurance. I repeatedly tell them they're stupid but they don't seem to mind...
2/7/2007 1:21:55 PM
They are most likely covered by your insurance.
2/7/2007 1:25:56 PM
A neighbor of ours sued his insurance company when they dropped him after he had a tree fall on his house. He submitted the claim because it was a huge oak. Probably $14,000 in damage. Took out part of their roof, a wall, rugs, flooring, etc. Took a crane and 4 guys to dislodge that monster. They dropped him right after and he sued them for discrimination. He won and that insurance company has to cover him. You may have heard of them.. State Farm? *laughs*. I would never use them because of that not even taking into consideration how they treated people down south when that storm hit. They won too.
2/7/2007 1:37:50 PM
^ Didn't state farm deny most [if not every] claim made during the aftermath of Katrina?
2/7/2007 2:25:51 PM
2/7/2007 2:30:53 PM
^^ That would be correct.State Farm is in mad damage recovery mode. They lost like 20% of all customers up to the court decision. They have tons of ads running trying to repair the fuckup the higher ups did. One of my family members is an insurance rep for several agencies. Their group dropped State Farm as one of the companies they represent. The reason was that State Farm didn't just hire some outside contractors to give them estimates. They kept hiring them until one gave them the answer they wanted and wouldn't hire those that said they should pay again. There's a great story about it that ran multiple times on discovery and other channels. State Farm tried to fuck a lot of people and lost horribly. They didn't have a chance. Half of the contractors they "disagreed" with testified against them. Screw your customer, screw your contractors... screw yourself. [Edited on February 7, 2007 at 3:32 PM. Reason : !]

Homeowners will not cover items of a person that is not a policy holder or a family member. If it was your girlfriend's stuff that was stolen, it will not be covered.
2/7/2007 6:42:14 PM
actually, state farm has won far more cases then it has lost....and the judge did not agree with the settlement in Mississippi....they lose one here and there....but they havent lost badly anywhere...homeowners doesnt cover flood, too bad for anyone living near the coast, they are gonna have 356 pages that describe what the insurance doesnt cover and 1 page on what it does.doesnt cover flood, but does cover wind! On a related note, I got renters' ins for the first time in November because I started having irrational fears of fires. On Monday, my building caught fire. Luckily, only smoke damage, but I was displaced for 2 days.
