Umm, someone tell me how getting stung by a jellyfish is "significant"? I ask b/c you can pretty much go to any beach and get stung by a jellyfish.

There is a big difference between Corpus/Padre Island and South Padre Island. South Padre Island is like the party place where everyone goes on spring break and the water is a lot nicer. Padre Island and Corpus beaches are usually covered in seaweed and aren't as nice. South Padre is at the very south end of texas. I would not go back to the corpus/padre island area unless I was going fishing.

is south padre fun year round, or only for spring break? not really looking for a college party place, but some good night life is neccessary.

I've been both places and you definately dont want to go to Corpus. S. Padre Island is awesome (especially during Spring Break). The Center of the partying universe down there during the day is the Radisson, stay there. But if you want a deal money-wise, stay at the equally as nice, but semi-removed Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort. If you stay at the Holiday, the beach in front of your hotel wont be hopping, but it will only be a 5 to 10 min walk to the Radisson's beach front (which is crazy). The nightlife there is amazing, the water is pretty clear, the sand is beautiful, the only place I've ever been that has topped it is the Bahamas.

s. padre is good year round given it's more lively during spring break. i never had too much fun in CC even when we went with a bunch of friends.

i live in corpus now and it is pretty cool even up here over spring break. Of course south padre is where the big spring break destination.
As far as night life goes...
downtown is pretty cool, quite a few bars, but also a few places that you want to avoid.
A pretty nice upscale place (Utopia) and a decent cheap little honky tonk that draws out lots of beautiful babies on wednesdays and fridays called whisky river.

otherwise your usual smattering of chain resturants etc.
