most salons do it

I think you have to tell them ahead of time though so they can send out for a kit or something to put your hair in and send off.

Man, there are some hideous creatures on that site. Charlie Villenueva was a mild example apparently.

I've heard that only some of the hair donated to these programs actually goes to the right place?

you can have people sponsor you to shave your head, and they also take donations of longer hair to make wigs for kids suffering from cancer.

They'll have an event in this area in march

ya make sure your hair can make it first, they didn't take mine 3 years ago because it was dyed.

^^yeah, my brother does that every year. i didn't realize they also take hair donations, i thought it was just sponsors. i'll just join in with him if they use the hair for something also.

no worries with dying or anything. i might have long hair at the moment, but i'm not that homo.

You are now able to have dyed hair as long as its not bleached. I am growing mine for donation right now. Has to be 10" minimum for locks of love but I hear that the Cancer Society in Asheboro takes a minimum of 6". A girl from work just donated there but I am not sure the procedures yet.

now that i think about it more, how is that measured? length of the hair or length of the pony tail? i assumed pony tail, but maybe not. i've def. got the length from my scalp, but only ~4-5 inches with it tied up.

I believe you can also bring in your hair , if you, for instance, cut it at home

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locks_of_Love

Quote :
"[edit] Criticisms
Locks of Love has received criticism for its practice of selling donated hair, rather than using it in wigs as the donors expect. According to a 2003 report by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, in 2002 alone Locks of Love had raised over $150,000 by selling donated hair and had received another $213,000 in charitable contributions and grants, but provided only 113 human-hair and 39 synthetic wigs. [citation needed]

Locks of Love representatives are frequent guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show and other daytime television shows, where they provide haircuts to guests and audience members. Though the representatives and show hosts normally suggest that the hair collected during the show will go into a wig, that the wigs are given free of charge to children with cancer, neither of these outcomes are guaranteed."

interesting. sounds like a pretty low number for that kind of money, but i have no idea what it costs to make one. fyi, this is on their site:
Quote :
"Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing. "

wigs aren't that expensive. what those numbers should say to you is that this "charity" is a SCAM and they are taking ppls hair and money and lining their pockets with it

I'd be OK with it if people weren't walking up to long haired people telling them to cut off their hair for a kid with cancer.

Most kids with cancer probably won't live to get a wig anyway.

I'd be mad if I thought I was cutting my hair for a needy child (alopecia or otherwise) and it ended up getting braided into some rich white lady's 'do.

"We need hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.
Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing."

So, they need hair of all colors ... that is, not counting gray. I guess they could have fun separating the gray out of my ponytail.

Mine's not getting cut until Metallica gets their act together or I reach the apotheosis of Rush's "I think I'm going Bald" (on Caress of Steel). The latter is the more likely.

I wish their site still listed participating salons... a few TWW'ers though PM'ed me some info:
Quote :
"I know that Sam and Bill's on Oberlin know the rules for locks for love. They cut 10" of hair from my boyfriend. Plus, they'll likely give you a nice cut afterwards. I hope that helps you."

i called my barber today (he was like lol, wtf have you been??). he said there are some girls that work there that handle doing such things for people. he's supposed to call me when he finds out specifics/details of what they're involved in.

my brother is checking out with st. baldricks to see what they do besides the sponsor thing.

i don't really care about getting any kind of haircut afterwards, so i could do it from home too. i'll just throw the #2 guard on my clippers.

locks of love is sounding a little shady, dunno about that. i don't think there is such a thing as a totally clean charity though.

MetalRed brought up an interesting point, what is the "going rate" for hair?

Pretty sure that all the Great Clips do it and your hair cut n style is free after that. You have to have at least 8 inches if you pull your hair down in a pony tail at the base of your neck. If I remember correctly they have info on their website.

Is anyone else doing it this year?

The only local venues that I know of are the Raleigh Hibernian on March 3rd, Napper Tandy's on March 10th, and the Cary Hibernian on March 24th.

^^ I was scheduled to do that on the 3rd, but I have to go to a fancy dinner for my mother that night and she doesn't want me to show up looking like a skinhead.

So I'll be doing it at the Cary Hibernian on the 24th instead!

So far I've raised close to $500 in sponsors.

I'm not reading this whole thread, so apologies ahead of time if I'm repeating someone.

Great Clips will cut your hair for free if you are giving it to Locks of Love and they also do all of the work that is involved in gathering and sending it.

After I got married I chopped off 10 inches and donated it to locks of love, it maks me cringe to think that some kd didn't get it and there is the possibilty they sold it.

bttt, anyone have any new suggestions? i haven't found anything that seems better than locks of love as far as donating the actual hair goes, despite some of the negative things i've read about them.

probably give it about another month or so i guess, i'm getting pretty tired of it.

St. Baldrick's does it as a fundraiser if you'll shave it... but not quite the same

At least you're still doing some good
